Why is Africa Poor

It is well-known that Africa is the poorest continent in the world. However, not many people could answer why that is. Throughout this unit we learned about the history of a few African nations, including the Congo, South Africa, and Rwanda. Through the information we learned, it was clear that many factors contributed to the underdevelopment of these African nations. Specifically, it was evident that the influence of European settlers, constant fighting, and unsuccessful government systems are all reasons why Africa is so poor.
Throughout history, the expansion of humans to new lands has always been very important. More specifically, Europeans have always been the leaders in finding and settling in new lands. Although this benefits the colonizing countries as it allowed to have more land and resources, it was always a problem for the natives of the land. This is most evident when looking at the negative impact the European settlers had on the natives of Africa. First and foremost, it is clear that the Belgian settlers cause devastation when they settled in the Congo. The Belgians traveled to the Congo because of its lush, green climate and its abundant natural resources. Although King Leopold II of Belgium never set foot in Africa, he soon owned a huge amount of land and had his eyes set on making profit. Initially, Leopold was looking to make money off of ivory. He soon realized, however, that the growing market for rubber was what he needed to pursue. Leopold took over the rubber industry and made a great amount of money as he enslaved the Congo people and used them to help him earn even more money. Leopold left the country in ruins, and even after he left, they were not able to recover. The weak country was not able...

...ese African nations clearly struggled with leadership and control and this was a major problem. In every succeeding nation today a strong and respected government is established which keeps all of its citizens in line, which is clearly not seen in these struggling African nations.
Because of the influence of Europeans, continual fighting within the nations, and a weak government, African nations have not had the opportunity to gain wealth like other countries around the world. Although Africa has plenty of land and natural resources, the resources needed to take advantage of these are not there. Today, things may be turning around for these countries. They are still, however, very poor because of events that happened in their history. Who knows if they will ever make the advancement necessary to become wealthy nations, but clearly these factors have set them back.
