Miss Representation "United States women continue make 77 cents to every dollar that men earn," stated the movie Miss Representation (Newsom J.S., 2011). In a world so based on equality, why do women continue to be paid less than males? In my eyes this wage gap is caused by 3 reasons, the history of the male dominating world, the jobs males and females take, and discrimination. The top ten richest people in the world contains only two women, coincidence? Since 1963 when the equal pay act was put into effect, women now get the same wages as men, or do they? The history of the male was to go out and earn a living for your family while the mother stays home and takes care of the kids. The females back in time were treated as a minority to the male and is often just his sidekick. Since males are the ones working for money and money creates power, men held the power and owned most of the businesses. This has changed drastically. The 2007 census states Men own 51.3 percent of all non farm businesses (United States Census Bureau, 2008). Females tend to work in sectors such as education. A perfect example of this is our school, look at how many of our own teachers are female? There is not a lot of money to go around when it comes to sectored jobs. Although men only own a little bit above 50 percent of the businesses, they tend to take a bigger risk. In our town for example KLN is a huge money making cooperation and who owns it? Kenny Nelson, who just happens to be a male. Job choices and risk taking also play a big role in the 77 cents to a dollar difference. History and job choice have an impact on this but neither reason is as influential as this one,
