There was a loud bang in the hallway and the whole class gasped when the teacher pulled out a handgun. When he entered the hallway it turns out that it was only people moving big and heavy furniture. So what if he would have pulled the trigger, problems like this would start showing up. People say that it would be a good idea to have guns at school but it would just cause more problems. The students could take or get to the gun if given the chance. I feel that students could also be more afraid of teachers if they were to have guns in the classroom. Teachers shouldn't have guns in class they could threaten students if pushed far enough, students could steal the gun and there are other alternatives.
Here are some other solutions to keep the children safe from intruders. There is a barricade called night lock lockdown and it goes on the door and if locked not much will make it through. It has been tested many times and successfully prevented many attacks. They say guns would be a much easier thing use against an intruder. I say if you use the barricade then it will stop them and the police would be able to arrest the attacker. It would stop the attacker from getting to the kids and the police could get the attacker before any harm is done.

They say that having the gun in the classroom would make it safer. I say that it would cause more danger to the children if there were to be a gun in the classroom. One main problem would be how would the teachers keep the gun protected. It sounds pretty easy for the teacher to be able to watch the gun, but if the teacher went outside the classroom for something a student could be able to get to the gun. The student could take the gun and steal it and that is one of the problems that would occur. It would cause more problems and potentially more school shootings. Source from -
Michael Eisinger an eighth grade science teacher says, "If a gunman is going to cause violence in a school, they are going to have the element of surprise," "My guess is that they would still be able to shoot teachers, students or whoever else they wanted before some sort of coherent response materialized. (Huffington Post) Arming teachers isn’t going to solve the problem. We still will end up with deaths in schools. The gunman may decide to take the professors gun as well, which will result in the enemy having another harmful weapon.
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
If there is a shooter inside the school campus then students will take out their guns too and start shooting at the target. Then when the campus police go to the scene they will not know who the real target is. Cops are trained to take out whoever may be a danger to someone else or to them. If they don’t know who the real target is then there will be many mistaken shots by the cops. According to “Why Our Campuses Are Safer Without Concealed Handguns”, “The campus police said that the probability would have been high that anyone emerging from a classroom at Norris Hall holding a gun would have been shot”
Another reason teachers should not be able to carry guns is because it would be very hazardous; Kids would feel unsafe with guns easily accessible. Having a gun in the classroom would create tension and make it to focus. If teachers accepted firearms then a child could get their hands on it. According to Corbett from Slate magazine, “If a gun finds its way into a teacher’s desk, briefcase, or purse. A child will get his hand on it.” If the gun was easil...
... As a high school student, I don’t take much stock in the safety codes and drills in place to keep students safe in the event of a shooting. I would feel much safer knowing my teacher has the ability to protect the class, rather than hide and lock the door. An educator is responsible for the students in their class. They are responsible for their education and safety while the children are in their classroom.
The topic ‘Teachers should be armed” interest me so much because I have met a teacher who dealt with a school shooting and he truly believed if teachers were armed the shooting would have never occurred There have been so many cases of shooting inside of schools, innocent people getting hurt and students and even staff members not feeling safe in school. I myself have met a person who had to deal with a deadly tragedy of a shooting inside of Columbine High School watching his own students’ lives end because of 2 boys who thought taking ones live can make theirs better. This changed his whole perspective on why a teacher should be armed ‘’If teachers were armed April 20, 1999 this would have never happened”, he said. This teacher told me if he was armed that day he could have saved students’ lives because he felt helpless when the shooting happened and there was nothing to do about it. Cases like these teachers should be prepared with a weapon in handy. Having teachers armed will lower the risk of school shootings.
School shootings have the ability to be stopped. They are largely one of the worst repeated tragedies our great nation has endured, and they should be stopped today! No terrorist wants to go out in his/her infamous blaze of “glory” by failing in their attempt. Arming educators has the capability to end school shootings in this decade. “And I haven’t even touched upon the pure deterrent effect of a potential mass murderer having to worry one of his targets might be armed” (Concealed Weapons). This quote presents the very real possibility that just if teachers are armed, future shooters will reconsider and possibly not attempt it at all. Providing this overwhelming deterrent in the foremost thoughts of a would be murderer emphasizes the positive effect concealed weapons operated by teachers could
However, schools could just prevent that my hiring a security guard or have one police officer on campus. This way the parents will be assured that their children are in a safe place and teachers also don’t have to worry about carrying a weapon with them all the time. By provoking teachers to carry concealed weapons, it will also save money for the schools because the teachers won’t have to take special lessons on the weapons and learn how to use
They are our first defense and would be able to react much faster than any police officer who couldn't get to the scene in time “(yes or no)”The teachers will be certified which requires a background check so all teachers carrying will be mentally stable. most of the public shootings are in gun-free areas, i.e. schools, malls, etc. By making schools gun-free it doesn't make the school safer for the children, it makes it safer for the shooter. “(yes or no) “Teachers are the first line of defense in a classroom. And it states in the 2nd Amendment that we have the right to bear arms. In Utah, the 10 years teachers have been allowed to carry guns no K-12 school shooting have occurred. Some teachers spend more time with students than their own parents do “(yes or no). I can not find a way that this is still not safe. The safety is
More times than not teachers are not properly educated, prepared, or skilled enough to arm the gun and shoot it during high stress crisis. A school teacher, Mrs. Robinson commented, “I’m not sure I could even get to a gun in a drawer or closet to use it. I think my gut instinct would be getting my kids secured first” (CNNMoney). An untrained or barely trained faculty member with a firearm is more of a liability than an asset. The weapon could easily fall out of the hands of a briefly trained teacher and into the hands of the perpetrator. Even annual training is not enough training for a teacher to be skilled enough to handle a firearm. Therefore, it is negligent to supply teachers with minimal training the right to carry a firearm on school
This sounds dangerous, having guns in schools, but it actually provides more security. Most SRO’s have guns, which they are trained to use. Kenneth S. Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services, says, “School districts considering arming teachers and school staff with guns would take on significant responsibility and potential liabilities that I firmly believe are beyond the expertise, knowledge-base, experience, and professional capabilities of most school boards and administrators” (Arming Teachers and School Staff- School Security”). Trump does not believe that teachers should be allowed to arm guns inside the school because of a liability issue. Nonetheless, most houses have guns in them, but when they are put up in a safe, or somewhere children cannot get to, the house is still a safe place. Therefore, if the school did allow the teachers to obtain a gun somewhere in the classroom, intruders would be less likely to show up because they know it is the whole school against the single, or few intruders. Teachers will only be allowed to be armed at school if they have a concealed weapons permit, CWP, and are thoroughly trained on how to use a gun. Teachers will be required to go through a drill once a month on how they should hand the situation if an intruder were to come into the building, as well as how they should handle a gun and when they should use the gun. Due to only
Teachers play a very important role in our kid’s lives on a daily basis. Not only are they there as educators, but they are also there as protectors as well, especially for our younger students. They are not only there to watch over them and make sure that they get home safely, but they are there to protect them from any harm, including a gunman. If a gunman were to enter the school and some if not all of the teachers were licensed to carry, he could be stopped before harming or even killing several people, including our children.
When I was in elementary school, I never feared of having an intruder enter my school, nor did we ever prepare for a tragedy such as that. It was not until recent years that school shootings became more of a common and feared issue. As a future educator, it is a terrifying thought that my classroom could be invaded and it would be my responsibility to protect my students. Even with the number of school shootings rising every day, our government has yet to make it legal for teachers in every state and every school to carry a gun in the classroom. This essay will review and analyze the opinions of multiple scholars and their input on the issue of teachers carrying weapons in the classroom and protecting the safety of students. It will discuss
On the side if teachers were to carry guns students and parents may be more scared. “When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in”(Corbett huffington post). “Kids get their hands on guns, and they know how to use them”( Corbett huffington post). “I have a patient who recalls his silent car rides with his father who kept two guns under the driver’s seat. Silently the boy watched, on guard, even though nothing ever happened. But then again nothing was ever
Even when people call the police, it takes time for the police to come and shooting does not take that much time to kill people. To solve this problem, I think the campus safety should carry guns. Also, teachers may have a right to have guns, too. When the shooter comes into the classroom, the teachers are the only adults that can protect the students. To protect children, they all have to be trained how to use the gun.
