At traditional colleges today, students live on campus at some point of their academic career and one physically attends lectures. In “The Future of College?”, Graeme Wood reports Minerva College as an alternative to traditional colleges that eliminates the problems in higher education. Minerva is a revolutionary college that challenges the traditional way of learning by operating online and minimizing the traditional campus size. In “Why We Should Fear University Inc.,” Fredrik De Boer discusses the way colleges are mismanaged and has led to students feeling entitled to avoid discussions due to their feelings. He also points out the continuous competition, to keep the appearance of institutions updated, is being funded by the costly of tuition. The Minerva College experience could replicate the traditional college student experience at FAU because although it is online, students are forced to interact with teachers and one another. Also, the tuition is less costly than at traditional colleges and guarantees diversification.
Minerva would not take away from the customary learning experience that a student can receive at a traditional college. In fact, it will enforce students to be present online whereas attendance and participation in some classes at FAU is not mandatory. Students that attend traditional colleges have the power to avoid participation in discussions that they believe can affect them. Therefore, as De Boer stated, “students are unwilling to be exposed to points of views that they disagree with” (De Boer). ...ifferent parts of the world can better a student’s social skills, foreign language practice and familiarize them with different cultures. Traditional colleges do not guarantee diversification which can put those students that attend Minerva to an advantage for jobs.
Minerva has the same purpose of traditional colleges where students can classes and work towards receiving a degree. Many of the same experiences that are offered at traditional colleges are offered at Minerva and includes those that are more essential to starting a career than others. Therefore, it could replicate college experience at FAU as well as improve the corruptions in higher education. The Minerva college experience allows students to interact during lectures and discussions at a lower cost and guarantees what traditional colleges offer of learning in different environments all over the world.
