"Why Social Workh There are a few reasons why people select a certain profession. One possibility in choosing a particular career based on a personal experience, personal values, or significant relationships with people. These factors play an influential role when guiding one to decide what profession will best fit him or her. For instance, one who has dealt with a rare disorder such as Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare condition that weakens the and affects the nervous system, may desire to be a doctor or a physical therapist and provide assistance for those with rare disorders. Regarding social work, there have been factors which guided me into choosing this field as my future profession. I am an African-American woman who was raised in a Christian household. Growing up, I lived with both of my parents and my two sisters. We are a close-knit family. My parents made it their primary goal to instill in us religious beliefs by having us attend church …show more content…
These strengths include the ability of communicating effectively, possessing a passion to help people, good listening skills, understanding needs others contain, and solving conflicts. Yet, my weaknesses consist of being too friendly or occasionally being impatient. As an African-American woman who is Christian, there may be some conflict with prospective clients. I could come across clients from different religions, races, sexual orientation, and cultures. He or she might see my religion or race as an issue, nonetheless I would be determined to help them to the best of my abilities, either with consulting a supervisor about steps to take or transferring him or her to another social worker. A previous life experience that could potentially affect my work is when dealing with people that are abusers or have been abused. Having faced this, I will have to discover some way to avert those personal experiences for providing services to those
Social workers address people’s problems every day, but it’s the identification of people’s strengths that provides clues for how to solve their problems and improve their life situations (Saleeby, 2013, pp.17-20).
Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
I started working as a Social Work Assistant in a Welsh child protection team in August 2014 until I gained my social work qualification in October 2014 and started practicing as a Social Worker. The team that I work in gains a lot of its staff intake from newly qualified Social Workers and it appears to be well geared to developing and supporting people who may be unexperienced in social work, but have a wide and varied set of skills from other arenas.
Thed 5A or also known as Social Justice is a subject concerning about social justice that is recognizing and acting upon the power that we have for making positive change. As social justice is concerned with equitable distribution of resources and privilege and with institutional fair treatment of individuals, it finds its way into the college experience in at least three ways, first it is the subject of inquiry and an aspect of critical studies, second it is an ideal against which institutional policies and practices are evaluated and lastly it is a rationale for the immersion of students in community work. Social justice is the idea that the state has an obligation to ensure a just distribution of resources.

Because of my culture, it has allowed for me to be more understanding of those that are different from me. The recognition of what it is to be different from what normal American culture may look like has brought forth a new and deeper level of empathy without even realizing. Growing up in a diverse area where my group of friends came from a wide variety of backgrounds has helped me to see the similarities we share as well as getting more acquainted and understanding of why certain groups do the things that they do. With that being said, I recognize that though I may be more equipped to related with people from different backgrounds a bit more than someone else, I know that I may still face some challenges (especially with how this nation is when it comes to race and cultural relations). As a social worker, a bit part of my profession is to create societal change.
The purpose of this document is to evaluate my practice and to reflect on a case I worked on throughout my 17week placement. My time on placement was divided between two centres that are managed as part of the trust operations and located within the mental health and disability division. Being placed in the two centres gave me the opportunity to work with a range of different disabilities. W Day centre caters for adults who have complex needs with behavioural issues where as the L day centre is for those with moderate to mild learning disabilities. “The model of day-care provision is facilitated by a partnership approach that includes other disciplines and agencies contributing to an integrated team provision…. “(Day care service for adults with a learning disability: 6:2012). Both centres provide “statutory day care and are registered under article 8 (1) of the Health and Personal Social Services (Quality improvement and Regulation) (Northern Ireland) order 2003.” ….. (Day care service for adults with a learning disability: 5:2012).
Choosing Human Services as a career as a Social Worker or Practitioner. I feel very passionate about as I mentioned before. This peer-reviewed article offers an explanation of the cultural climate of social work advocacy as influenced by technology. According to Baker and Hodgkin (2014), the use of information and communication technology has caused changes in communication patterns and social exchanges. There is an emphasis on moving away from hesitancy in the use and implementation of innovation in order to social work advocacy to evolve in a paralleling manner to society. Bent-Goodley, T. B. (2015). Important of advancing one social work: NASW 60 years later.
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. Whether the client needs counseling, guidance, or advocacy I want to be the person to help them. My drive for helping others and motivation to change social policies for the better is why I have chosen social work as my future profession.
Social work practice requires many skills, which need much practice themselves. This needs social work students to be open to trying within safe environments and scenario’s for mistake, such as with their peers and with emotional safe scenarios such as stress at University. This begins with a requirement to do 5 minutes of interviewing with a peer which includes many social work skills such as active listening, encouraging, paraphrasing, being/creating a welcoming and safe environment and other such basic and beginning skills.
As an upcoming social worker I understand there are certain traits I portray that are strengths in the social work field. I also understand that were there are strengths, there are weaknesses. I did not realize what my strengths and weaknesses were until I began to practice in the field. Some strengths I have found in myself are good listening skills, ability to handle stressful situations, and time management skills. Along with those strengths I have found my weaknesses are speaking what I believe about a situation, procrastination, and taking on too much responsibility.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
A few of my strengths are having Empathy and activing listening skills and using social perspectives and being organized. As a social worker empathy is very important, empathy is the ability to identify with or vicariously experience another person’s situation. Empathizing is both an intellectual and emotional process that makes it far easier to understand and help others solve their problems. Active Listening is another aspect that I believe I am personally gifted in. The ability to listen carefully, ask pertinent questions and retain verbally transmitted information is vital to the counseling aspect of social work. It’s how we establish trust, open doors and discover valuable details about the individuals who seek our help in understanding their unique circumstances. Using Social perspectives is also another major part of social work, I believe receiving and processing verbal information, a social worker must be sensitive to body language, social cues, implications and cultural patterns of behavior. While some clients may clearly state their needs and work toward solutions in a focused manner, many others will find it more challenging to express themselves verbally, requiring a perceptive social worker to “read between the lines” in order to interpret the thoughts and feelings being held
According to Leiva (2014), Social work is a profession that gives help or advice to individuals, groups or communities who have financial or family problems. However, the National Association of Social Work (NASW) define social work as a professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favourable to this goal.
