Performance evaluation process is one of the processes that can help an organization attain its goals in the most effective way. However, this is one of the processes that is hated most by not only employees, but also managers. Most managers have gone even a further step to ensure that this process is abolished in their organizations. Studies have shown that most managers would also wish that this process is abolished in most organizations because they find is useless or it takes much of their time. Research has also shown that this process reveals some weaknesses that the managers have, so this is why they do not like it at all (Schraeder & Portis, 2007). Instead, most managers are given a standardized format on what they should ask and how they can assess each employee. The major problem here is that a standardized process makes assumption that all employees are the same. Managers do not have the required support on how they can deal with several emotional responses. When performance evaluation goes wrong, it leads to negative relationship between the employees and managers. A good manager must have the ability to distinguish personal behaviors and performance level of an employee. Most managers end up going on a tangent when they fail to carry out a right performance evaluation. They begin to do evaluation of the behaviors and characteristics of their employees, instead of focusing on their performance in their work. Most managers find it hard to perform good evaluation because of this thin difference that usually makes them develop bad relationship with their employees (Schraeder & Portis, 2007).
The process consumes a lot of time
In most organizations, managers are left alone to gather the information required to carry out performance evaluation. They have to keep track of what each employee has done, their level of performance and other factors affecting their performance. There is high levels of anxiety level for most managers as they have to consider how to rate their employees consistently and fairly. The managers view performance evaluation as a burden to them.
