Why Did so Many Early Jamestown Colonists Die
The colonists of Jamestown were hardworking, faithful and never gave up. They stayed hopeful, and kept moving along. In 1607 the original ship of colonists arrived at Jamestown. Then on October 8th Newport arrived with 70 men. After that there were 200 men at Jamestown. Then in 1610 250 men come and by may only 90 remain. Without the food or resources to live they perished. The freedom seekers, the land seekers, so many died. Many colonists died because of three main reasons Starvation, Native American attacks, and lack of skills. John Smith says that “out of 110 of the first settlers 47 were gentlemen” (59). Gentlemen are rich people who eat a lot and don’t work. They also brought no apothecaries ( medicine makers ). This would be completely necessary because they would reduce the chance of getting sick. John Said ‘that they also only brought 1 surgeon” (59). You need more than 1 surgeon if he dies or gets sick you have no doctor. John also says “They only had 1 bricklayer” (59). That means they had one person to make houses that would take forever. These terrible decisions would be a large factor to the colonist death.
Colonists died in early Jamestown because of three main problems, these are starvation and disease, Indian attacks, and lack of skills. These are main because Indians are well trained in fighting. Without the right jobs they don't have enough people to live without major dieing. Starvation is main because many died because food was scarce. And disease was a main cause of death because they had no medicine makers. This is important to us for many reasons. One is that we want to know about our past. We also love to have more knowledge. These are the main reasons that the colonists of Jamestown
