The dictionary on Google has respect listed as: “admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements” (Google). I have never associated with respect with admiring someone’s abilities, qualities, yet along their achievements. The two different mothers in the stories view respect differently as well.

Between my parents and my upbringing in the church, I grew up being taught that respect for others was of the utmost importance, especially respect for those in a higher position than me. Additionally, my job as a taekwondo instructor highly emphasizes the essentiality for respecting others. Therefore, it comes as a shock to me that my score was so low, and I fell in such a low percentile. The results of this assessment motivate me to be more aware of others. Now, and once I get out in the business world, I hope to show all my peers and elders respect. A definition for honor that is generally accepted is that it has to do with high respect and nobility. This, however, only raises more questions. In this report, we will go over what honor is within other periods of time (including modern day), what it is within different cultures, describe what honor is to an American, and compare this American honor to that of another people, the Shi’a Islamic people.
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
One of the best qualities of society is one known as honor. However, honor is one of these words which cannot be tied down with an exact definition. People define honor with different ideas or opinions: being honorable is being respected, and to be honored you must be admired; you must have high morals to be considered honorable. Some say that your honor is determined not by yourself, but by everyone else. The definition of honor seems to have always been this confusing. However, it is noticeable that honor’s definition has changed over time, and it can be compared likewise. Honor can be seen as it was, then compared with how the way the United States views it, the way other countries view honor , and the way the world views it now.

So I could try not to do those things to other people. I won't cut off others in traffic, or yell, or act rude at the grocery store, or throw garbage in the street. That's just a place to start. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
James Bowman, a scholar and writer, suggests that, “we are living in a ‘post-honor society’” (Punn). In short, we are living in a civilization where honor is not as prominent as it used to be. Honor was different during the victorian age, that was a time when men lived to stand up for his principles. In James Bowman’s book he explains that, “over the 20th century honor has been largely ‘discredited’ to the point where the ‘word doesn’t seem to exist anymore’” (Punn). This is to say that currently honor is sort of hidden beneath other things such as loyalty and sacrifice. Honor in our society today definitely is not as important to people as it once used to
In three seperate dictionaries, respect is defined as a regard for or appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something. In my opinion, respect goes far beyond this definition. Respect is the cornerstone of the society in which we live. Although many look at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness, this word has many different aspects. For instance, I would not give an elder the same type of respect that I would give my peers or myself. Respect is not considered a neccessity in this world but, I can’t imagine a person getting very far in life without this virtue.
In conclusion respect is wrapped around our day to day lives. A famous philosopher once said “Respect is showing acknowledgement for some ones superiority in a certain field.” You can’t buy, demand, or force people to respect you but you can respect others in order for them to respect you. What people do not understand is that if we use common sense we would be respecting ourselves, respecting others, and respecting property all the time. Respecting yourself, others, and property might not be easy to do but it does have great rewards if you just do it.

The dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard. This does not explain what it is; it only outlines what it may be.
