Nature vs. Nurture which one of both makes more contribution to development? Nature is inherited through genes or nurture which is learned by experimenting and learning. These are tough questions, difficult to answer because history has shown that both work together to shape the cognitive development of children. Are humans innately good or bad? According to Puritan’s concepts children were most likely to be evil, and should be punished to be disciplined. They thought that if they didn’t punish the child, their personal development was going to suffer. John Locke (1600s) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1700s) changed the perspective of how children should be treated. The nature vs. nurture controversy is an age old question in the scientific and psychological world with both camps having evidence to support their theories. The controversy lies in which is more influential in the development of human beings. While there is no definitive answer for this, it is interesting to look at each of them separately.

In conclusion it can be seen from looking at physical development and language development that genes and the environment operate together to influence development. In relation to child development the gene-environment perspective is not the only one to be considered. Gene only perspectives, Environment only perspectives and the Transactional model which sees the child as actively shaping its own development all play important roles and help us to understand the process of child development.

As children grow towards adolescence they go through many stages of development. Child development refers to the stages of physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and language growth that occurs from the birth to beginning of adulthood. All aspects of a child's development may be affected by many different factors, including a poor learning environment, lack of social interaction, cultural background differences, abuse, and loss of a parent. All of the before mentioned examples can affect the child's maturation, "a biological growth process that enables orderly changes in behavior, relatively uninfluenced by experience" (Myers 172). Children grow and mature at very different rates, some faster than others, which is why it is necessary to understand the importance of the different types of child development. Though all parts of child development are important, it is probably language learning that is most important to a child's development as a whole.
Children development refers to the changes in physiology, mentality, and emotions in children from birth (or during pregnancy) to adolescence. Children are dependent on family’s support during this time period. It is not until the beginning of adolescence that children start to develop autonomy which is the process of forming their own identity and making their own decisions. Parents have a big impact on children’s physical and mental development during this time period. They are the most available resource. They provide necessary material resources for children’s survival such as food, water, and housing. They account for most of their children’s socializations especially from birth to adolescence. They influence children’s mental development by passing down religious preferences, beliefs, and social status. They also can create special environments to foster children’s talents such as piano lessons, sport practices, academic challenges, etc. For instance, children from poor family have less access to cognitively stimulating environments which is shown in the data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the National Household Education Survey (Corwyn & Bradley, 2000). This means children from poor family will develop cognitively at a slower rate than children from normal or rich family where they are provided with many stimulating opportunities. Besides all the good impact parents have on their children, depending on the the parenting style, parents may establish behavioral problems such as internalizing problems (anxiety, depression) and externalizing problems (aggression and antisocial behavior) in their children. The Ecological Systems interactions with the child will influence how the child develops; the more encouraging and nurturing these relationships are, the more chances for positive development. The influences of family and culture are especially important because they become the building blocks of a child’s maturation. Children move through the different layers smoothly when taught the basic concepts of love, respect, tolerance, and honor. These principles are needed to instill positive values in children.
As humans we are controlled by our brain. Our brain is where we develop motor skills, speech, IQ and our personalities. As stated in my previous paragraph nature is hereditary. Eye colors, height, hair color, weight all are genetically developed. Nurture is a set of acquired skills or traits. These traits help determine your capabilities. In development nature and nurture go hand in what kind of person you become. For example, genetics determines height, but nurture is the way we acquire or help refine the skills to adapt to whatever height we are be it tall or short.
One of the most well-known debates in psychology is nature versus nurture. Nature is pre-determined traits, influenced by biological factors and genetics. Physical characteristics such as height, hair color, and eye color is all determined by the genetics we inherit. Nurture is the influence of environmental factors. There are many different influences that play a significant role in how school-age children develop and the person they will eventually become. Developmental psychology is known for engaging in multiple debates over theories regarding human development. The textbook definition of human development is, “scientific study of processes of change and stability throughout the human lifespan” (Papalia & Feldman, 2012, p. 4). Every human being constantly changes from the moment of their conception through their last days on Earth. Human development is constantly evolving which brings new topics to evaluate and discuss. Those who study human development, developmentalists, evaluate different theories in the hopes of expanding their knowledge on the subject. This allows them to use their findings to impact people’s lives for the better. Their findings deal with multiple subjects including education, one’s physical and mental health, social policies, and child upbringings. A debate that is often brought up in human development is whether or not each individual is active or reactive in their own development?
