We’re all familiar with the infamous assassination stories, but most of use would agree that assassinations are rarely justifiable. While many of the victims hold controversial political views with which their assassins disagree, it is nevertheless unjustifiable to kill anyone that has not posed a threat to you or someone else you care about. A perfect example of this occurring in American history is the assassination of John Lennon, a famous member of the Beatles. The assassination of John Lennon was unjustified because he was an inspiration to a lot of people and believed in peace around the world: however, his assassin believed because he wanted Lennon’s fame he should have been assassinated. John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980. John Lennon was well known for mostly his music, both in the Beatles and his solo career, but he was also known for promoting peace and well being. A quote from Lennon and what he believed is “If everybody demanded peace instead of another television set, there’d be peace(johnlennonpwace.com).” He was also a important part of the protest against the war in Vietnam. He believed that the situation in Vietnam was not our problem or concern, and that young men should not be dying because of this. He tried to persuade people of this “Peace Movement” as well. He participated in parades and peaceful protests. The reason John Lennon’s ideas were so powerful because he was extremely famous and well known, and he is one of the few celebrity who used his fame to communicate a positive message to the world(johnlennonpeace.com). The reason Mark David Chapman thought him assassinating John Lennon was justified is because he said “I thought if I killed him I would steal his fame.” This is one of the most ridiculous statement/claim I’ve ever heard. If you kill a celebrity, people will hate you and never forgive you for it. This crazy explanation for the killing of John Lennon is why Mark David Chapman’s legal team prepared for a insanity defense.
