This is very much like the Renaissance, where many individuals made achievements that to them may have seemed small, but has shaped our entire world today. In today’s standards Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press may seem simple and ancient, however it laid the groundwork for modern printing which has had huge impacts on society. No more were the days of spending an entire year on one copy of one book. After Johannes’ innovation hundreds of copies of books could be printed with ease. This opened up many new possibilities. During this time period the church was the center of life, and high members of the church wanted to keep it that way even going as far as to ban some books. Some people were very upset with some of the things the Catholic church was doing such as giving out indulgences. A man by the name of Martin Luther went against this idea and changed everything when he began to reject some practices of the Catholic Church. Books today are everywhere. We find them in many households, libraries and schools all around the globe. We find many different types of books; from stories to educational textbooks, we regard them today as sources of knowledge and amusement. But it wasn’t the case before 1455. That year, one of the greatest inventions in human history was revealed to the world; Gutenberg’s printing press. This press allowed printing in massive quantity, spreading books all around Europe and the rest of the world at a fast rate. The printing press had many positive consequences on society. Martin Luther desired to reform the Church because he believed that it was corrupt and wanted to be seen as the gateway to Heaven.
