In F. Scott Fitzgeralds Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a Wealthy man that made his money through unknown ways. Gatsby obtained his money during the roaring 1920s and this time organized crime was at large because of prohibition and the illegal selling of alcohol. Gatsby tries to offer a position to nick but he declines because the whole thing is sketchy. Gatsby uses his money to impress daisy and gain social stature even though the way he obtained it may not be viewed as ethical. While there people out there that were stealing and killing in the roaring twenties, Gatsby was committing crimes of a lesser intensity and he was making more money than the murderers and thieves. Gatsby Needed the money to live in East Egg and live across the bay from his true love, daisy. He throws parties every weekend for the upper class using the money that he earns by running a group of Bootleggers. Gatsby Runs into trouble through this company and loses his slick composure in front of nick a few times when he is on the telephone. No one in the novel suspects anything of gatsby because of the way he composes himself and uses his facade of a collected man with a lot of money and no regrets in accordance to the way he obtained the money. Gatsby is different from other criminals during this era because he is not simply breaking the law to break it because he is breaking the law to get money to impress and win the heart of someone that he loves and has loved for years. It is strange to everyone in the novel that gatsby has created this wealthy lifestyle for himself when he grew up as a poor farmer.
