A Substantial Decision Education is a key player in today’s society. Without it, having a successful future is improbable. Thus, the choice between sending children to a public school verses homeschooling is one that should not be made lightly. The popularity of homeschooling is growing, it is estimated that there are 1.73 to 2.35 million home educated students in the United States (Ray). Why is homeschooling the better option? Educating children at home has many distinct advantages: environment, academic performance, cost, strong ties between family members and social aspects. Another great advantage of choosing to homeschool is controlling the environment in which the child is being exposed to. Children being taught at home can feel safe and comfortable in an environment in which they are familiar (“Public School vs. Homeschool”). When being taught from home children are more apt to focus and study due to less distractions (“Public School vs. Homeschool”). Some may be surprised to hear that homeschooling is actually cheaper than public schools. Parents of home educated children tend to only buy supplies that are needed, unlike public schools whose budgets are often spent on unnecessary items (Cost of Homeschooling vs Public School”). Other expenses public school parents must cover is the cost of school supplies, new clothing, technology (ex. Calculator), class fees, lunch money, field trips and extracurricular activities. All these items can be very costly and they add up to be more than what homeschooling parents pay (“Cost of Homeschooling vs Public School”).
