ABSRACT Franz Joseph Haydn, a famous man who left behind an even more famous legacy. One may ask, “Why is Haydn famous?” There are several reasons he is well-known in the musical world. He is known as a brilliant composer whose marks on classical music can still be seen today. Another reason he is famous is that he was another famous composer and pianist’s teacher, Beethoven. Haydn’s compositions are truly one of a kind, due to him not being allowed to gain outside influence while writing for a royal family. Some of Haydn’s most known works are The Seasons and The Creation. These musical numbers are said to have been inspired by Handel, another composer. They were mainly played in orchestras and in Catholic Church services. Some of Haydn’s other prominent works include the Seven Last Words of Christ and the Paris symphonies . Haydn wrote, “104 symphonies, about 70 string quartets, nearly a dozen operas, 52 piano sonatas, 15 Masses, and 2 oratorios. ” One can infer from just looking at the sheer number of his compositions that this was his life’s work and dedication. Rosen calls Haydn’s classical style as being romantic .
