Being the first child of my Chinese family to attend college in the United States, my goal is to be able to have a professional career that will be beneficial for my community and I. During various time of the year, I participate in community service projects and make donations. My favorite thing about doing these service projects is that there are many available opportunities to help and that I would be able to resolve issues facing a community. Community work takes time, patience, and dedication, therefore it is not a simple task. However I believe that as I grow older, I would continue to look forward doing community services. Not just because of benefits I get from it, but because I feel a sense of achievement from my ability to help
I think that community service is something that everyone should do. Some people only do community service because they need the hours for school or an extracurricular activity, but when you something nice for another person, it not only makes you feel 100 times better about yourself, it also, whether you know it or not, improves another person's life. Being able to give to another person without expecting anything in return is the best quality that a person can have because the 21st century is a time where a portion of people have what they want at their fingertips. What some people don't realize is that not everyone has the blessings of living the life that they have, that is why I try so hard to give back to the community. I personally do community service a lot, and seeing the faces of the people that I have helped means so much to me because I know deep down that I have done something that required me to put others needs before my own. I get that feeling when I help out in the special needs class at my school. I feel complete when the students give me hugs and thank me for my help. Vincent Kwan, an accountant in California, is a Chinese immigrant who moved to the U.S. with his family since 1971. Sandy Wong, currently a college student in Santa Monica College, immigrated to U.S. with her family since 1995. And her future goal is to be a politician in U.S. I have learned a lot about Chinese immigrants’ views career choices and personal interest. As the position of Chinese and the generation changed, they have different views with these two issues. They were all talkative and willing to share their personal feeling with me.
I am dedicated to helping out our community and school, because it warms my heart and soul. Seneca said in about 40 to 60 A.D. that you should “be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received.” In other words you should not boast about the numerous projects you have accomplished and how much physical work you executed, but rather pride yourself on how you helped people in community and school, and how you have affected their lives with positive means. I feel life is joyous and it should be the feeling everyone illustrates, and this is exactly what keeps me functioning in the stressful world today. I find comfort in helping others to make their lives a little more like heaven and this comfort motivates me to perform copious service projects to the best of my capability whenever I find the time. Time is fair to the rich, the poor, and to every race, because time is equal and gives everyone 24 hours daily to accomplish their required tasks. Because time is so valuable and I am occupied by difficult advanced placement and honor classes and juggle school, clubs, sports, and friends, I joined Key Club, a high school division of the adult service club, Kiwanis. Key Club opened new doors to make every extra minute count towards helping others.
Going to college is something that has been drilled into my brain by the public education system since I was in first grade. They obviously did a phenomenal job because here I am, a high school senior, applying to various colleges and universities trying to find the right fit. There are many reasons why I want to go to college, but there is one reason above all others, and that is that I want to be able to share my passion of music with others in hopes of sparking a similar passion inside of them.

Community service is a good thing to get involved in because it teaches you that giving back to the community is very helpful and everyone appreciates it. It is very easy, all you have to do is go there and people will tell you what to do and these tasks are simple. When I volunteered to be part of the soup dinner I was nervous at first, but after a little bit I was completely fine. Everyone at the church was really nice and they appreciated the help a lot. All I had to do was put food on tables for people that came in and go get food when they were out.
Community service is such a rewarding experience for me that it has opened up my mind about how I see the world. I think that a mind is like a parachute for if it is not opened, it cannot work and do its job. By taking part in some form of community service it teaches a person compassion and understanding towards others. When you volunteer for something you truly believe in, it shows how interested you are and reflects the work you put in. Although, I personally do not plan on becoming a teacher, I do think it is important to give back to schools and help teach the youth. When students first walk into a science, they are either overwhelmed or are really excited to learn. However, if children are not introduced or shown that science can be fun and easy to understand, it can make them feel more empowered and less afraid of the subject. Throughout my high school career, I’ve been recognized as a well rounded student. I engage myself in team related sports that require teamwork and reliability, extracurricular activities that require responsibility and patience, all while managing to keep up with my academics. During my freshman year of highschool, I’ve dedicated my time and hard work to all activities offered by my former high school located in Marshall, Alaska. I was apart of the volleyball team, girls basketball team, and a native youth olympics athlete.
After high school I plan to attend the University of Arkansas and double major in international studies and political science with a minor in a second language. I want to study in these areas because I want to do humanitarian work in my future. My goal is to work for UNICEF and help children around the world who live in bad circumstances. I believe international studies and political science will help direct me towards that goal and give me the skills and knowledge I need. I plan to study either Spanish, Russian, or Arabic.
Without my family and my closest friends, I would not have the push to pursue my passion. Without them, the concept of music would cease to exist in my life. I plan to pick my career based on my talent, my personality, and what I really want to get out of a career. As a child, I was determined to become an artist when I grew up. I took lessons, entered contests, and I loved working with different utensils.
When I was in early elementary school, whenever asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always answered with absolute certainty; “I’m going to be half zookeeper, half nature explorer!” This was never an answer that surprised anyone, considering the fact that I spent most of my days in the pastures behind my house, typically with mud matted into my hair, searching for anything that would catch my interest such as snakes, rocks, or flowers. Twelve years later and few things have changed, besides maybe the fact that I’ve finally learned how to keep the mud out of my hair. I still spend most of my free time outdoors.
I was born on July 29,1999 to Danette Tavares and Elston Seo. Through them I got two older sisters, Alison and Ashley, and one older half sister, Kristen. From when I was born until now I have always lived in Honoka’a. I love to relax and enjoy the beach with my friends and family, but I do like to play sports. For example I played soccer from kindergarten up until my sophomore year of high school, then I played softball for a couple of years.

Myself though, although I am a city girl at heart from the largest city in Volusia County, I enjoy embracing my roots in agriculture through my involvement and preparation for a career in the industry. My father’s family from up north were involved in agriculture before moving south many years ago, hence my growing up in the city.
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I had to do it.
