I chose Vostok because it’s a new take on an old concept presented with a contemporary language. Rassadin is not as notable in the industrial design world outside of being the winner of the ROCA design competition in 2008 (Russia).
Purpose
Vostok is a bathroom concept consisting of a bath tub, lavatory, (wash) bowl and (towel) holders. The idea is to recreate “the bathroom” with only the most essential commodities with the capacity of a full range bathroom. You would most likely see Vostok in the homes of contemporary homeowners, preferably with a knack for USSR history. Vostok has a bath tub, toilet and sinks, plus holders for towels, clothes and toilet tissue like any other bathroom, but within three pieces.

It has rounded sharp edges, wide curves, and a nice reflective surface. This help accentuates the touch point of Vostok making easy to utilize. It’s also up to date with popular appeal; modern and stylish with a retro-futuristic feel and it’s aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Form + Function
With the Vostok, the form of the spacious opening and height suggest it’s function and the form indicates the function by adhering to bodily movement—standing or bending down/squatting. This relationship between the form and function enhances the quality of design by being practical, effective and functional. Without the form, the function of the individually pieces of the set would be confusing to understand at best, especially the toilet.
Vostok does more than just operate as a part of service to the home, it impacts and influences users and their lifestyles. Vostok evokes emotional reactions that draw their eyes to the design and objects themselves, causing the user/owner to be more inclined to want to use the product.
Are changing rooms of large chain retail stores becoming a place for a political statement? In a reading by David Sedaris entitled Adventures at Poo Corner he discusses the topic of public defecation in the retail setting. Sedaris gives many possible explanations as to why this is, as well as providing a tremendous amount of examples. To determine that Sedaris truly isn’t making up these stories, some examples that are close to home—Sioux Falls, SD—will also be examined, along with further explanations as to why people choose to defecate in peculiar places.

Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939) was a self-taught painter and multitalented individual, born to a shoemaker and maid. Petrov-Vodkin was a son of his times since his interests varied from Russian Icons to Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Russian Revolution. Considered one of the most original Russian artists of the firs decade, Petrov-Vodkin’s work caused fierce controversy. After his death, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin’s name was eradicated from the Soviet art world and in the following quarter century his work disappeared from museum collections. However, his work once again received recognition in the latter half of the 1960s within Russian culture.
Once again, it is a fashionable and stylish choice for adding personality and pizzazz to home décor, and craftsmen use it to embellish many decorative items.
Around 4:00 PM on August tenth, 1628 the warship Vasa set sail in Stockholm harbor on its first trip as the freshest ship in the Royal Swedish Navy. In the wake of cruising around 1300 meters, a light blast of wind brought on the Vasa to heel over on its side. Water poured in through the weapon entrances and the ship sank with lost 53 lives. The Vasa lay in shallow waters of Stockholm harbor (at 32 meters profundity) and after beginning endeavors to rescue it fizzled, was to a great extent overlooked until it was situated by Anders Franken in 1956. In 1961, 333 years after it sank, the Vasa was raised and was so all around protected that it could skim after the firearm gateways were fixed and water and mud were pumped from it.
Graphic designer and typographer Stefan Sagmeister has always had a unique way of viewing the world, therefore has created designs that are both inventive and controversial. He is an Austrian designer, who works in New York but draws his design inspiration while traveling all over the world. While a sense of humor consistently appears in his designs as a frequent motif, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work. He has created projects in the most diverse and extreme of ways as a form of expression. This report will analyse three of Stefan’s most influential designs, including the motives and messages behind each piece.
The Interaction Order of Public Bathrooms, written by Spencer E. Cahill, is an article that does a fairly well job at analyzing interpersonal relationships and individual practices in restrooms. Cahill used ideologies of Emile Durkheim, Erving Goffman, Margaret Atwood, Horace Miner, and Lyn Lofland to help construct his perspective on the individual’s expectations of bathroom etiquette through our experiences with others and how we internalize these behaviors.
Another unique project which was undertaken by Schindler is Mumbai’s luxury hotel, Sahara Star. The structure of this hotel is circular in shape and is designed in such a manner that it looks more like a tropical natural reserve than just a hotel. A distinguishing factor about this hotel is its 3 unique elevators. These elevators were custom made by Schindler in Switzerland. These elevators are more often seen as an experience rather just a means of transportation by visitors. The custom-made glass panoramic elevators give a great view of the entire hotel, as the elevators move upward a wider area of the hotel can be seen. Also the elevators are designed in such a manner that when all the 3 elevators stop at a single floor, they form a hemisphere, a symbol that joins guests with a natural environment.
Massimo Vignelli was an Italian designer who worked in a varying range of areas such as package design, advertising, industrial, interior, architectural design and the list goes on. Vignelli was also the co-founder of Vignelli Associates, which he started with his wife Lella some years after coming to America. Vignelli’s wide area of work and expertise has all helped contribute to make him a designer of interest. He has had works that have been published all around the world and throughout many museums as well.
