Some people have their entire life planned out from a young age. They know what they want to be when they grow up, and they work tirelessly to accumulate the knowledge and experience necessary to reach that goal. My path was to medicine was not so direct. When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a fireman. My first career aptitude test suggested a career in farming or transportation. My actual work history is almost comical: potato picking, grocery store bookkeeping, computer technician, sales management, insurance underwriting, healthcare human resources, and most recently, Uber driver. I have always valued new experiences of any kind, and enjoyed the challenge of learning how to perform at each of these jobs to the best of my ability. It’s been a long and interesting road that has lead me to the field of medicine, and admittedly I was worried at the beginning of this year that I would have difficulty deciding what kind of physician I wanted to be. My fit with this specialty, however, reaches beyond my own fascination with the field. Ultimately, I believe there are two critical qualities I possess that justify why I belong in pediatrics. The first is that I have a sense of optimism that permeates everything I do, and a resulting tendency to find the positive in almost any situation. I think anyone that has spent time in pediatrics understands this to be vital. When a child is sick, it can feel scary, exhausting, and hopeless for all involved. While it’s important to be honest and upfront with families in order to provide the best care possible, the ability to celebrate small accomplishments and nurture the positive aspects of a child’s health can have immense healing effects, not only for the patient, but for the entire
