Overcoming Communication Challenges in Human Resource Development

It is inevitable that in Human Resource Development, you will find challenges along the way. These challenges will cause conflict and difficulties. HRD is “a process of developing and unleashing expertise for the purpose of improving individual, team, work process, and organizational system performance.” (Swanson & Holton, 2001.) We are humans and conflict will happen. Although this is the case, you must find a content balance. One of the struggles that HRD is challenged with is a lack of communication between its employees. “Ever since we have been able to communicate there have been failures and misunderstandings. In the context of the workplace, these communication failures cause a variety of problems at both individual and business levels.” (Tuck, 2014.) Why does the challenge, lack of communication happen? This could be from several different reasons. A few of these reasons are; employees failing to listen to their managers, employees that are not properly trained, and/or lack of responsibility. They do not realize the consequences from lack of communication. More misunderstandings can be from e-mails and job descriptions that do not clearly describe what is expected of the employee. Rumors and gossip start, the job can possibly be done wrong, and productivity can get low. Ultimately, a lack of communication can fail a business. Workers are often times terminated or quit for the reason of poor communication. When there is poor communication, employee’s sometime lack the knowledge they need to get their work done. When the boss doesn’t work with the employee to explain what they want or how they want something done, it is complicated for them to do it right.
