People don’t commit sexual assault because they don’t have enough sexual opportunities. People commit sexual assault because they feel entitled to other people’s bodies and disregard another people’s right to consent. As mentioned before sexual assault can take may different forms, but depending on the age and even gender they can respond differently. Our society has put these expectations of males always being able to protect themselves. If a man is depicted as vulnerable either physically or emotionally then they’re not a real man. It is reported that at least one and six men have been sexually abused or assaulted. I would like you to pay special attention to reported. This number maybe different because men and even boys may feel ashamed to come forward and to say something so this number may be significantly higher. Since everyone absorbs the myth that males can’t be vulnerable or victims or week and how it is essential to masculine gender socialization often this type of violence goes unspoken of. The website 1 in 6 puts emphasis on how many boys suffer harm because adults who could believe them and help are reluctant, or refuse, to acknowledge what happened and the harm it caused ("Myths & Facts About Male Sexual Abuse and Assault", 2007). This increases the harm, especially shame felt by boys and men, and leaves many to believe they must “tough it out” on their own.
