Over 228 years ago, our founding fathers sat together to discuss what our nation needed. What they came up with was a constitution that was monumental and it changed the way everyone looked at government. That document has survived to this day-- the oldest written constitution in the world. One might ask why the constitution survived for so long. The answer is simple in the fact that the constitution has brought it’s people together, and has served those people well and to the extent that it was meant to. People are satisfied with their rights and they feel secure with the laws that protect them and their nation. With the flexibility to change as the country does, our constitution has and will outlive all others in the world.
Before the constitution, there was document used to run our nation-- The Articles of Confederation. This document only survived for ten years due to it’s inability to unite the states in the common good of the nation as a whole. This document made the state’s power overrule the central government. A document of less than 6,000 words, the Constitution is not overly detailed. As the fathers guessed, congresses, presidents, and the courts have reinterpreted the document over time to meet the needs of the moment. These changes are called amendments and are listed at the end of the Constitution. The constitution is flexible in this way and can be “shaped and molded” before it has to be torn down so another can be built. If our nation needs more control, or if we need to outlaw guns (in example), then an amendment can be made after much consideration by the 3 branches of government.
