Is College Necessary?
College isn 't a necessary component to be successful in life but society thinks otherwise. The article “Why We Need Vocational education”, by Mark Phillips explains why and how our education system needs a great amount of work, while “Why College -For-Everyone Is a Sham”, by Diane Ravitch and the article from procon.org explain how college education is not entirely as useful as society makes it sound. Students should go to college to get more educated; not to be more successful that someone else. People are going to college for the wrong reason. America, believe it or not, is not number one in education around the world. Shocking? Not exactly. Many suggest or argue that the cause is lack or something called vocational

Why? Because that is how parents. friends, and society in general have taught us. it is now wired into our brains to think that if we actually go to college; we will be more successful in life. However, that’s not entirely true. Many have dropped out or have their high school diploma and they are doing just fine without the college education In the article “Why The College-For-Everyone Is a Scam “, by Diane Ravitch she explains that she “loves education”, but she thinks “everyone should get as much education as they want and should keep on getting better educated all their life”, but now “thanks to the internet, the means of self-education are easy and inexpensive” (Ravitch 1). Ravitch is basically saying it is their decision. Everyone should be able to choose whether or not they want to go to college. However, it is their decision and only their decision; not anyone else’s. Society views college as a way to earn a better jobs, “the corporate reformers like to say that everyone must go to college if they want to have good jobs in the future” (Ravitch 1). She proves that we all look at college as a way to earn more money; to be more successful in life. Everyone gets so caught up in life that they think it’s a competition. Education is not a competition. Education is a way to expand your horizons of the
College can’t teach us everything’s. For example college can’t give us the job experience, only give us the education of the knowledge, and I believe their all lot thing need to be learn in the society. Many people who get a college degree but can’t find a job, which mean they waste there youth and their parent’s money to support their child go to college, and even can’t find a job after a college
The main reason why people go to college is not because they want to but because they have to. Most high school seniors are pressured by their guidance counselors and parents to go to college because it is "the right thing to do." In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote "College is a Waste of Time and Money", she states that students go to college because " . . . Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized." (481) The student may have different ideas about what he or she wants to do in life, but because they think that these "mentors" know what is best for them, they probably end up doing something they do not want to do, resulting in being miserable and resentful.
Is it necessary to have a college degree before having the opportunity to experience the dream career of your choice? Depending on what background you came from, there are different reasons why we go to college. Most of us go due to career change/job position, increase our intellect/knowledge, not to be stigmatized, playing as a role model either to our children or even someone that we care of. In his essay, “A College Education: What Is Its Purpose?” Andrew DelBanco mentioned the three reasons college still matters which are: Economic (A college degree has replaced the high school diploma as “the minimum requirement into the skilled labor market.”), Opportunity (Our democratic form of government requires an educated
During high school, whether it is by a teacher, parent or classmate a student will be advised to go to college. “College is where you find yourself,” they will say. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Attaining a college degree is not necessary for creating a life for us as our civilization makes it out to be.
A majority of people these days are planning or are going to college. These people have many reasons for going to college. The option of going to college is a major decision and there are many factors that are considered in making this decision. One of the many reasons of making the decision to go to college is to receive a bigger salary. Another reason is for the opportunities that become available from going to college. People also decide go to college to be better prepared and successful in the future.
Is college important? Is it worth it the time and investment? The short answer is YES it is worth the time and money and YES it is very important. Saying that it is worth it still doesn’t make the decision for some easier, it can actually make it harder. There is often a fight between the investment right now vs. the dream job and life in the future. I know many of you will end up in a STEM field, many if not all jobs in any of the STEM fields require a college degree. The STEM fields consist of agriculture, architecture, computer and information sciences, engineering, engineering technologies, interdisciplinary studies, mathematics and statistics, natural resources and conservation, and physical sciences. I
In our society, a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. The main reason people go to college is not because they want to, but because they have to. Guidance counselors and parents pressure most high school seniors to go to college because it is “the right thing to do.” Our society has it in our mind that if a person does not go to college they will not become successful. Exactly one year ago I was in high school, and being a senior was probably the most stressful year. Most seniors worried about filling out college applications and deciding what major to do. Inputting all your grades and knowing that you were not the best student is especially stressful. For most people, going to college seems
The first reason that a college education is necessary is because it can help people to get a better quality of life in the future, especially for people who were raised from poor families. Ever since I was a little kid, I was always being told by many people that “knowledge can change your destiny. It makes you not only rich in life, but also enrich you as a productive person.” In my understanding, college education opens a door that can eventually change people’s future as long as they will willing to work hard. Hence, I always had the dream about being like a grown-up to go to college and ge...
Some people attend college, because they feel like they to have to make other people happy. When your are in high school people will tell one things like “Going to a college is just the right thing to.” They never explained why college is the right thing to do they just keep pressuring us to attend college. The person may
Isn’t twelve plus years of school enough? Who needs college anyway? Working a nine to five job with no chance of a promotion would not be that bad, would it? Do not deny, this is not the desired lifestyle of most young adults. Clearly, the way to achieve a superior job and future is college. College is the most necessary tool in order to be successful in life.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.
College is a very important thing. If you go to college you will most likely get better pay in your career. Also, with a college degree, you have more opportunities. I believe that everyone should go to college. If you don’t go to college and just go into some job and that fails then you have no backup plan. A college graduate is more likely to be offered employment than another who didn’t attend college, if you have a college degree you will make more money in your lifetime than someone who doesn’t have a degree, if you are considering having children having a college degree is very beneficial to them, you have a higher chance of having better health yourself, college is very beneficial, and if you go to college you will have a better social
Even though, colleges and universities might have an increasingly negative reputation due to things like high tuition fees, less faculty, and less than desirable graduation rates, it is still very important to attend college. Having an education does not necessarily mean going to school for years in order to have a great job with a great pay. Of course going to college, and getting a degree can lead students to a well-paying job instead of having to settle for making minimum wage with only part time opportunities. College is about more than just getting a degree. It is something that plays a crucial part in future success. Statistics may say that the majority of students end up in debt trying to pay for college, or
Finding myself a college junior at age 56, I have often thought about why one might want an education in the first place. When asked why it's taken me so long to complete college, well almost complete, my reasons are both simple and complex. I never real ly liked high school that much and my family moved around a lot. As a result, I attended several high schools. In retrospect, I now understand that high school is difficult even if one never moves. But I digress. Why get a college education? Would I be sm arter? More importantly, would people around me think of me as smarter? In fact, did it really matter at all what people around me thought? Was it money then, or pride? Perhaps it was respect.
