I can do anything, you can do. Are boys better than girls? Are girls better than boys? In the article, “Modifying Gender Role Stereotypes in Children” there are three main points that I will touch on in this written assignment. The three main points are: gender stereotypes affect children and their behavior into adolescents and adults, gender equality, and the lack of research done on this topic.
Blue is for boys, and pink is for girls. This is an example of rigid gender stereotyping. For a majority of people, rigid gender stereotyping is quite common, and for most they see no harm. Males develop an alpha male complex, while women settle into the role of damsels in the distress. Furthermore, “Rigid gender role stereotypes have been found in adolescents who report dating violence, and young men who endorse rape-tolerant views are more likely to hold traditional gender role stereotypes, particularly depicting women as inferior and men as in charge.” (Modifying Gender Role Stereotypes in Children. 2011) This hinders us as a society, because it causes many inequalities. If woman stays home to take care of children, she is seen as a good mother, but if a father were to stay home with his children, he would be ridiculed and considered a failure and lazy. Also, another example being, if a mother goes to work and wants to progress in her career, she is seen as selfish. In the video, “William wants a doll”, a young boy expresses he wants a doll to love, hold, and care for. Throughout the video, his parents, more so his father, tries his best to suppress William’s interest in wanting a doll by buying him “typical” boy toys such as a baseball bat and soccer ball. My overall reaction, is prime example of what a majority of people think, the father was right, why would a boy want a doll? By the end of the video, my thoughts somewhat change, but to be honest I felt quite awkward watching the video from start to end. It was quite the learning experience for me, because I have always thought of myself as a very open person. To learn that I, myself, fall into the masses of stereotypical gender schemes made me think that I should do some research and make a change will I still can to help my son become an overall better
Throughout the early history of our nation, it was apparent that females were expected to abide by certain cultural and societal norms. Females were often tied to a male member, whether it was their father, husband, or male relative, the mere identity of a female has always been attached to a male figure (Connell, 2003). As society has evolved, its morals and ideals have changed along with it. Today it seems that men are dominantly placed on the masculine group where women are subsequently put into a group in which no masculinity is present but only femininity. However, despite the positions set by society, different forms of entertainment and media have intentionally, if not subconsciously implemented their views on gender roles. Grown Ups 2 suggests that men are the Naïve, idiotic, layed-back macho man whereas the women are deemed the most responsible ones but also the ones that are dependent on in a way they would fight for the love of a man.

Sex role stereotyping and gender bias permeate everyday life. Children learn about sex roles very early in their lives, probably before they are 18 months old, certainly long before they enter school.(Howe, 1). The behaviors that form these sex roles often go unnoticed but their effect is immeasurable. Simple behaviors like: the color coding of infants (blue & pink), the toys children are given, the adjectives used to describe infants (boys: handsome, big, strong; girls: sweet, pretty, precious), and the way we speak to and hold them are but a few of the ways the sex roles are introduced. The fact that everyone eventually comes into contact with buying toys whether you have kids or you have a friend or family member who have kids which makes this an important topic. Eventually, everyone has to buy a child a present. Would it bother you that all toys are either pink or blue and there is no in between? Or does sticking to what your child is already familiar with and knows the more ideal option when it comes to gender stereotyping with children’s toys? Authors James Delingpole and Eleanor Muffitt both do a good job at arguing both sides to this issue. Although both authors provide valid points throughout each article, about gender stereotyping with toys, James Delingpole clearly was more effective in persuading the audience because he used all three elements; ethos, logos, and pathos to support his idea.
