Who’s to Blame for the Events in The Crucible? The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, was set in the late 1600’s in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. During this time period, the Salem Witch Trials took place in Salem Village. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of witch accusations, trials, and executions. Witchcraft was shunned in the Puritan society due to their strong beliefs in God. Witchcraft was seen as a way of communicating with the devil, which is against the Puritan society’s beliefs. The Salem Witch Trials were a historical event that has been repeated throughout history. If we forward to the early 1900’s, another historical event that took place was the Red Scare. John Proctor, another main character, had an affair with Abigail. This was just the beginning of the tragedy. Both characters were wrong, but it was Abigail’s actions that made her guilty. Abigail says, "John-I am waitin ' for you every night" (1099). Abigail is in love with John Proctor, but there’s one problem that interferes with them having a relationship together. John Proctor is married to Elizabeth Proctor. So Abigail has no other options but to wait. Since Abigail wants to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, she takes extreme measures and does what one would do if they were communicating with the devil. Abigail and several other girls go to the woods. The woods are thought to be where witches communicate with the devil. The following day after Parris, another main character, saw the girls in the woods, questions the girls about what they were doing. They all say they were dancing in the woods. Once Parris leaves, Betty, a character with Abigail in the woods that night, says to Abigail, “You drank blood, Abby!” (1097). Abigail drank blood to try and kill Elizabeth Proctor. If word gets around of them even being in the woods, the town of Salem would be afraid of witchcraft
