Anyone, anywhere is able to experiment with drugs and alcohol, but some are more likely than others we label them “at risk” and when they are minors they b come “at risk youth”. What makes someone at risk? There are many contributing factors that lead youth to try drugs and alcohol: peer pressure, rebellion, exposure through a parent or guardian and a slew of others. Adolescent is a difficult time where there are many changes happing internally and externally at the same time. Some youths have already experienced traumatic events in their lives or living through them during them at this time. In this paper I am going to describe some risk factors that could lead to youth experimenting with and becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol. Statistics of what drugs are most widely abused by America’s youth. What treatment options are available and which have been the most successful. Education of parents, guardians and adults is one of the best preventive measures we can take to battle drug use by our children.

There are many factors that can lead to an individual becoming at risk to drugs and alcohol use. Addiction is a disease that effects a person on every level and can be influenced on all those levels also. This is called the intergraded approach it includes biological, behavioral, sociocultural theories. Biological looks at a person’s genes, looking for alcoholism and addiction in their family tree. Behavioral is learned from the environment, what is going on around the child. Is the child witnessing caretakers indulge in drug use? Are problems dealt with by escaping the pain with using? What about others actions, are there teens making money selling drugs? That can be enticing to a child from a single parent home living in pove...

...of 12 step recovery groups geared directly to youth. Where young people can meet and share experience, strength and hope. There is a comradely like no other when all are working together towards a common goal of a better life.
