Summary The movie focuses on an orphanage located in the small town of St. Cloud, Maine. The main character is an Orphan named Homer who has been been adopted twice and then returned to the orphanage where is never adopted again. His mentor, Dr. Larch performs illegal abortions on young women. As Homer grows up in the orphanage he becomes a trained, unlicensed physician. Homer realizes that the illegal abortions are immoral and refuses to perform them when instructed to by Dr. Larch. Homer meets Candy and Wally when they come to the orphanage to receive an abortion to terminate their unwanted pregnancy. Homer leaves the orphanage and travels back home with Wally and Candy. Homer has no plan on what he is going to do when he gets to where he …show more content…

He ends up working as an apple picker on Wally’s Mother’s apple farm where candy also works. Wally leaves to head back to the army and leaves Homer and Candy behind on the apple farm. Homer lives with the other migrant working farm hands in a cabin on the apple farm. He grows quite close with his fellow employees, despite their skin colors. Apple picking season comes and goes and the migrant workers leave to find another job but Homer stays behind with Candy. Homer and Candy fall in love even though they know it's not fair to Walley.The two love birds try to keep their affair a secret from the farm hands when they return for another season of apple picking. Homer notices that the relationship between the head Migrant worker and his daughter has become strange. He comes to find out that Mr. Rose, the head farm hand has impregnated his daughter Rose. Homer is faced with the terrible task of performing an illegal abortion on rose, the exact task he vowed he would never do. Rose leaves in the middle of the night, Mr. Rose kills himself, Wally is injured in the war, Mr. Larch dies and Homer returns back to the orphanage to take over for Mr. Larch as a

    The story is told in first person through Tangy Mae Quinn, the darkest child of Rozelle Quinn. Rozelle is a light-skinned woman with ten children by ten different fathers, who separates her children based on skin color. She shows favoritism to her lighter skinned children and hatred to her darker skinned children. This is important because the story takes place in Parksfield, Georgia in the late 1950’s, right before the civil rights movement. It starts off with Rozelle Quinn teaching Tangy Mae how to clean her employer’s house because she believes she is going to die over the weekend. News of Rozelle “dying” spreads throughout the town and even beyond which brings her oldest child, Mushy, back into town. It is later revealed that Rozelle is only acting as if she is dying because she is pregnant. While in town, Mushy promises her siblings that she is going to save them from the abuse of Rozelle, but says Tarabelle has to be first due to Tarabelle’s exposure to prostitution. Months after giving birth to her child, Judy, Rozelle kills her by throwing her off the stairs. After this incident, the children slowly start to leave her although Tangy Mae and Laura stay by her side. After majority of her children have left, Rozelle is diagnosed with insanity and is forced to move in with Mushy. By the end of the story, Tarabelle is killed by a fire started purposely by her mother; Tangy Mae has graduated high school and taken Laura with her to cross the Georgia border.
