In The Village (M. Night Shyamalan 2004) there are two main characters in the film, Ivy Walker (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix). Ivy Walker is a blind woman that relies on a stick to guide her, but in the film there is a common literary device that the blind woman is the only one that actually sees the truth. However, she is also a red head and monsters are attracted to the color red. Ivy walker is also the protagonists in the film. At first, Lucius Hunt seemed to be the protagonist in the film until he was stabbed. Even though Lucius is the catalyst of the film, he is also the one that causes all the action in the film. Even though Ivy is blind, Ivy claims that she has the ability to see a certain color around many people. Ivy is also a calming voice of reason in some matter. In the film, Ivy is supposed to punish Noah and send him to what they call the “quiet room” for hitting one of the villagers. Instead, Ivy says, “You needn’t go into the quiet room if you take an oath to never strike any person again.” Ivy does not send Noah to the “quiet room” because she loves him like a brother and does not want him to get in trouble.
