Jaws Vs Enemy Of The People Peter Benchley’s novel, “Jaws”, written in 1974 and shortly after release it was turned into what was and still is one of the highest grossing movies of all time. According to Box Office Mojo (2016) a website dedicated to compiling the income of hit movies Jaws has had a total gross income of $260,000,000. This movie tells a story about a vicious man-eating shark that is terrorizing a New England beach. Although the town’s police chief thinks it better to warn the tourists about the persisting danger Larry Vaughn, the town’s mayor has other plans. Due to the beach being a hit tourist attraction and the towns peoples source of income the mayor decides it best to keep the shark attacks quite. There is a lot of speculation surrounding this novel and the origin of the idea. Although nothing is for certain it is widely speculated that “Jaws” was a newer rendition of the 1882 play “Enemy Of The People” written by the famous Henrick Isbsen.This play was Henricks most …show more content…

When it was first discovered that a ferocious shark was going around biting of limbs the police chief (Martin Brody) suggested that the tourists be warned and the beaches shut down. However, the town’s mayor (Larry Voughn) had another plans. Due to the beach being the small towns only sources of income the mayor stated, “I’m only trying to say that Amity is a summer town. We need summer dollars. Now, if the people can’t swim here, they’ll be glad to swim at the beaches of Cape Cod, because of this he decised it would be better if the beaches remain open while the police chief, a professional shark hunter, and a marine biologist hunt down the great white.     The book has vivid imagery making the reader imaging as if her or she was their right beside him in his whole investigation. Such as “In the winter of 1978, through, a fierce blizzard hit southern Connecticut. Temperatures were often below zero and at one point it snowed for thirty-three hours straight. Perhaps it was the cold that killed the fish, or the copper sulfate I helped the caretaker drag through the pond the previous summer to manage the algal blooms, or maybe even the fishermen id noticed trespassing on the estate one day, scoping out my grounds. But whatever caused it, after that never again did I spot a living fish in that pond again.”(Greenberg 12-13). This quote shows how good his imagery, tone, and diction is, when I read it all I could think of is that storm and the pond. The author has an excellent writing style and keeps the reader wanting more. Even though the book has a lot of good things for it the only thing I would tell the author would to give more connections of him to the story.
