The Biography of Samantha Smith Samantha Nicole Smith was born into a small family on April 21st, 1998, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Chief Prosecutor Christine Smith and Part Owner/Superintendent Brian Smith, sister of high school graduate and a future freshman of Butler University Nathan Smith. Samantha came from a hardworking, family oriented, working class of community involved family members on her father’s side. Her decided major was Biology, however she also had to take intro classes that the university required to graduate. One course that she had to take was an IDS-Being Human course which made a large impact on her thought processes. It imprinted itself into her mind due to explaining why everyone is human. Not biologically, but how we are human because of the way we think, act and tolerate other human contact. One piece that impacted her was the story Speech Sounds authored by Octavia Butler. Samantha was intrigued by the piece due to the communication between the people throughout the story even with the impairment of senses each citizen was given. It showed Samantha that human nature is based around the communication through individuals to interact with each other through gestures or sounds. However, throughout Speech Sounds each character had a different impairment which led to confusion and distrust due to having to communicate in contrasting ways that were irregular for them. Additionally, this taught Samantha that impairments shouldn’t stop communication nonetheless intrigue you to speak to the impaired to listen to their stories and learn from how the community has treated that individual. Due to her major in Biology, Samantha’s courses were Biology of Organisms, Microbiology, Pre-Calculus and Academic Writing. This was a challenge for Samantha because there was limited personal time and extravagant duration of school, homework and studying. In spite of the dragging nights at the library, Samantha kept up with studies, and had a thorough understanding of what each course was referring to. In despite of Samantha’s first year in college, she learned a significant amount about her morals and the way she was raised. She came into controversy when she realized that not every individual had the amount of discipline and respect that she was enriched in at a young age. Nevertheless, when she had a dispute with her roommate, Jocelyn, Samantha didn’t understand why her levels of sincerity and gratitude were different than her own. Samantha was taught when she was an adolescent to apologize by declaring how to say sorry by explaining what she did wrong. Whereas, Jocelyn would announce her apology due to thinking that is what Samantha wanted to hear; however, not because she believed that she did something regretful. Although, despite their opposition of consideration towards sincerity, Samantha realized their differences and decided that arguing, hostility and physical contact was not key to this situation, which reminded her of a

A poem written by Jan Beatty "Saving the Crippled Boy", was a challenging poem for me and my colleagues. It helped me to learn to be non judgmental. On the night of Saturday, February 1, 2014, I sat down with my grandfather, David Latta, to conduct an interview with him. He currently lives in Clarkston, Michigan, in the newly refurbished basement in my mother's house, along with my step-father, sister, and her son. One could say that my mother's household is quite the crowded nest, with four generation living under one roof. The perspective my grandfather obtains from living in such an atmosphere, is not only something I kept in mind while conducting this interview, but something that guided my questions.
Susan Smith could have been a normal woman. If you passed her on the streets you wouldn’t know that she would turn out to be a killer. Susan had a secret though, a deadly secret. To them seeing a person just move their lips leaves them wondering what the person is doing. Margaret 's parents felt trapped in the hearing world where their only guide to life in the hearing world was Margaret since she was the only one who could link them to the hearing world. Margaret gives up her social life just to be with her parents; caring for them. Throughout her life, Margaret feels guilt, shame and despair because she has deaf parents who can 't seem to be able to become dependent in their society or provided her with brand new clothes like her rich friend 's parents. Instead her mother has to make her the prom dress while her friends go shopping for a brand new dress. Margaret 's mother, Janice is very conservative which prevents Margaret from getting a dress cheaper than her friends ' since she believes that the deaf don 't beg. Janice and Abel do want the hearing to pity or make them seem as disable people. When they go out, they hide their signs in order to prevent people from laughing at them and making them feel so different. They 're scared to sign in public because immediately people stare at them and make a face as if to say "what are they doing, crazy people", bringing down their self teem. Kiki Smith is a feminist artist who is known for using the human body and its substances in ways that no other artist has before. “This work displays often grotesque and uncomfortable themes that would usually only be seen in private, however socially suppressed ideas towards things such as defecation and human fragility are often purposely overlooked today.” (Feminist Blog). Some of the issues she displays through art are abortion, AIDS, gender, race and women. Smith is known for using animals, fairytale icons, and other elements of nature in her artwork.
With that knowledge the deaf character gained more confidence when communicating and was able to achieve bigger goals in their life then when they had little to no knowledge of how things worked in society. The main characters in the story with communication disabilities are Laura and her son Adam. Laura and Adam are both deaf. Both of them were born hearing, and then over time lost it. When someone is deaf, it means that the person can’t hear at all. One of the ways that deaf people communicate is by using American Sign Language, which is where a person uses gestures to communicate with others. Melinda was an outcast and loner in high school who was overwhelmed, fearful, and confused with her life and her environment at school. She was always silent in class and afraid to speak in front of people. Many students today might feel the need to fit in with other people so they wouldn’t have to be looked down upon. As we take a look at Melinda’s life we’ll be able to see how she handles her daily conflicts. In the book, Speak, Melinda Sordino, an incoming freshman at Merryweather High, starts her year off with a terrible start. She’s stuck with a mean history teacher, by who she calls Mr. Neck and a whole bunch of other weird teachers like her English teacher of who she calls, Hairwomen, because of her crazy, uncombed hair. Her favorite teacher would seem to be her art teacher, Mr. Freeman, because he seems to be the nicest and most reasonable. Every student, even her ex-best friend, Rachel Bruin, gives her nasty looks and treats her rudely. All this trouble started when Melinda called the cops at an end-of-summer party. Everybody thinks she did that just to bust them and get all the people in trouble but instead, she called the cops for something more terrifying. Having a harmonious family is a part of the American Dream. In The American Dream, written by Jim Cullen, a soldier wrote to the newspaper that he would “relate to” their “wives and children, parents and friends, what” they “have witnessed…” (Cullen, 114). Willa Cather introduces Rosicky’s family, which emphasizes on close relationships and positive community impacts in “Neighbor Rosicky”, and F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that Charlie wants his role as a father back in “Babylon Revisited”. Even though both Cather and Fitzgerald value intimate families in integrity, they have different attitudes toward life.
When I was born, my family had just migrated to California from Mexico. In a new country, my father worked in landscaping earning less than $4 dollars an hour, while my mother relied on public transportation to take her newborn child to and from doctor visits. In the land of opportunity, my family struggled to put a roof over our heads. But never discouraged, my parents sought to achieve their goals and worked tirelessly to raise my younger brother and I. From a young age, I was taught the importance of education; this became a major catalyst in my life. My desire to excel academically was not for self-gain, but my way of contributing to my family’s goals and aspirations.
