King Duncan, King of Scotland, is already dead. He was assassinated at the castle of Macbeth the Thane of Cawdor while he was sleeping. This assassination of King Duncan is somewhat interesting because there were some people suspected of killing him.
The reason for assassinating him is unknown but it may be caused by jealousy, power, money, or etc. It may be hard to know because King Duncan is the kind of leader anyone wants.

In the start of the play, you can tell that Macbeth is extremely reluctant on his choices. Macbeth will probably get to be above all else, yet he wouldn 't like to do what he needs to do so as to end up ruler at first. While the witches mention Macbeth’s possible rise to kingship through the death of Duncan, it is Macbeth who jumps to the possibility of the king’s murder saying, “If good, why do I yield to that suggestion Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature? Present fears Are less than horrible imaginings. (1.3.138-142).” There are many ways that the king could die, yet it is his desire for power leads him to pick the speediest path to the king’s end. Macbeth does in fact end up killing the king, as well as his best friend to protect his claim to power. From there he quickly becomes drunk with his rule and starts to terrorize the land, forgetting his morals and saying that he’ll just do whatever he feels when ever he feels like it. On the night Macbeth is planning to murder Duncan, the Old Man see many strange events: “And Duncan’s horses (a thing most strange and certain),/ Beauteous and swift, the minions of their race, /Turned wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out/ Contending ‘gainst obedience, as they would/ Make war with mankind” (2.4.14-18). It creates a scary feeling in the kingdom, and means something bad will happen to the kingdom.
