Throughout the play John Proctor is considered an honorable man to the townspeople. However though, unbenounced to the others John constantly struggles with the urges and temptations of his affair with Abigail Williams. Due to the affair with John, Abigail becomes increasingly jealous of John’s wife Elizabeth Proctor. Due to her jealousy Abigail starts making false witch accusations towards the women of Salem. In the beginning of The Crucible John realizes the only way to prove Abigail is lying is to admit to the affair, which would ruin his good name in the town. In The Crucible, the main struggle of all women is to be a perfect Puritan, wife, or friend, while the men struggle to uphold their reputations without sullying anyone else’s. Elizabeth Proctor is a prime example of a Puritan woman who strives to be the perfect wife. She demonstrates this by cooking for her husband and putting effort into cooking for him. When he compliments her food, she blushes, which exemplifies her desire to please him and to be a good wife for him. Elizabeth also forgives John for having an affair with Abigail. Even though John accuses her of judging him for his affair, Elizabeth maintains that she does not judge him for those actions. When he continues to claim that she has not and will not forgive him, she says, “I have sins of my own to count. It needs a cold wife to prompt lechery” (Miller 137). While reading this literary work we find there is a lot more than meets the eye to this seemingly antisocial farmer. We discover that through unintentional meaning John is actually the moving point in this plot. There are many sides to John Proctor and they occur at different stages of the play, John is a complex character and is very well respected even though he has done wrong things. Arthur Miller was in the same situation as John Proctor in 1956-57 because he refused to give names of people he saw at communist meetings. There was the same trial system. If you confessed you would stay alive assuming you had turned from the communist meetings, however if you denied that you were seen at communist meeting you would have been hanged because there would be no evidence to show you weren’t there. You get the impression that the character of John Proctor was based on the real life character of Miller.
John Proctor is an honest, though harsh, man who is clearly the protagonist of The Crucible. Before the beginning of the play, John had an affair with Abigail Williams, a girl who worked in his household, which was abruptly ended when Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, fired her. This event causes Abigail to desire revenge against Elizabeth while she still pines for John. Once the trials are well underway, Abigail accuses Elizabeth of being a witch, which leads to her arrest. John goes to the court in defense of his wife, where he reveals that he did indeed committed adultery with Abigail in an attempt to expose her as a fraud and a liar. Unfortunately, John's appeal falls on deaf ears and he is arrested as well. While his wife manages to get a temporary stay of execution, due to the fact that she is pregnant at the time of the trials, which in the end saves her by insuring her life until the chaos, hysteria, and persecution comes to an end, John is sentenced to death. The play ends with his hanging, but his death puts an end to the trials.
While most are opposed of John Proctor's idea of being a man of integrity, some may view John Proctor as a man who has motives for protecting his name. At the end of The Crucible Proctor is in the court to free his wife for a false accusation of witchcraft, which seems like he loves his wife, and he does. In the beginning of act two of The Crucible, Elizabeth confronts John Proctor, her husband, about him seeing what looks like his mistress, Abigail. Elizabeth knew he had an affair with Abigail while she was sick. She knew John would go into town to see Abigail while she was at home and ever since then, she’s had suspicion of what John is doing when he goes to town. “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not.”(pg.163) While John is trying to put in effort into their marriage, Elizabeth ignores him because she is hurt that her husband would betray her with another girl. Typically an honest person under their religious faith would believe in telling the truth, but not while having an evil thoughts being whispered in your ear disguised as manipulation. When we are first introduced to John Proctor, we learn of his affair with Abigail Williams, Abigail's involvement in the accusations of witchcraft, and of John's desire to do what is honorable. Because of John's desire to do what is honorable, he ends the affair with Abigail and begins to attempt to repair his broken marriage. Abigail's jealously of Elizabeth and desire to be John's wife leads to Elizabeth's name being mentioned in court. Abigail's mention of Elizabeth's name in court reveals her attempt to get rid of Elizabeth for she knows Elizabeth will claim innocence and be hung if she does. When word reaches the Proctors, about Abigail's mentioning of Elizabeth's name in court, John concludes that Abigail's motive is to kill Elizabeth. Knowing this information, John is faced with his first difficult decision, save his reputation, keep his affair a secret, and let the accusations continue, or ruin his reputation, tell of his affair, and end the girls' accusations. Not wanting to ruin his good name, John decides to hold his tongue and because of this the trials continue and more accusations are made, some of which lead to his wife's and his friends arrest for witchcraft and bewitchment.
In many situations, people's intentions aren't so clear. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor's intentions are very debatable. He can be viewed as an egomaniac, or as I see him, a martyr. A martyr is someone who dies for a cause, which is exactly what Proctor did. Proctors intentions are to stand up for what is right and even die for it. Proctor sees how unjust the court is and he wants to change that. That would make him not an egomaniac, but a martyr.
