In the short story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, one can see that the character Jig would give birth to the baby, because she is unhappy with the life she has been living, becomes stronger in her character, and later is free from the American. The first reason Jig would have given birth to the baby is because her unhappiness with her life would have intensified to the point of having the baby. When the man, the American, first attempts to convincing Jig to abort the baby, Jig looks to the ground. She does this as if in response and in shame to the idea. Jig seems to be reluctant to continue to live the same life she has been living for she says, “That’s all we do, isn’t it- look at things and try new drinks”. …show more content…

The author uses the “white elephants” to symbolize the baby. Jig is vibrant about the baby and as such gives a comparison between the hills and elephants to express her feelings. Jig wants to change the way things have been by having baby. The second reason Jig would have had the baby is because she becomes stronger in her character. In the beginning of the story, the couple freely talk to each other. Once they get into the heart of the dilemma, Jig at first seems to feel finally convinced by the American to abort the baby. However, in seeing the scenery around her, she changes her mind. She sees what she could “essentially have” if she were to have the baby. Jig sees the true life in having the baby. She decides she really wants the life of the baby and continually tells the American to stop talking. Jig makes up her mind and does not want the American to interfere by talking her into abortion.
