The theme that the researcher has chosen is Poverty and the topic that will be elaborated on is an investigation into the causes of the rising poverty and the effects it has on 20 people in the community of Portland Cottage. According to the Oxford dictionary Poverty can be defined as the deprivation of food, shelter, and money. It is in the unbearable squatter settlements, and it is in the ramshackle nature of our towns and villages, “it” is being refer to as poverty, while proposed solutions up until now have been nothing more than meaningless platitudes and promises. Portland Cottage is a rural, beautiful, tranquil, and friendly community located in the southern parish of Clarendon, it consist of a population of approximately 5000 people where by 70 % are unemployed. In 2004 Portland Cottage was struck by a devastated hurricane known as Ivan, during this period the people of the community were like refugees in their own village, survivors starting from scratch. Portland Cottage is slowly been inundated by a sea of encroaching poverty which has enveloped the community from north to south and from east to west. Due to consistent observations over the past years, it can be said that the three major causes of the rapid increase of poverty in Portland Cottage is Disasters, lack of education and unemployment. Poverty has very adverse impact on people’s lives as it affects one’s health drastically, due to the fact that they are unable to purchase the simplest medications and pharmaceuticals. In order to formulate this research, a questionnaire of 12 questions where distributed over a 5 day period, it was based on the impact poverty has on one’s life in today’s society. Of the responses 70% thought poverty is a big problem which cannot be solve due to bad economy of the country. The majority of the persons thought that natural disasters, lack of education, and unemployment were the major causes of the rising poverty in Portland Cottage.90% thought it resulted in shortage of opportunities.
