On November 29th, Mary Inman gave us a talk on the topic whistleblowing, which let me know more about the whistleblower activities and the whistleblower protection. According to the definition given by the website whistleblowers international, whistleblowing is someone who reveal the unethical or illegal activities within the company. The person can be current or past employee, or an outside individual who is familiar with the unethical activity. This whistleblower does not need to be U.S. citizen.

First of all, the government need to change. Chinese government is the one who lead the corruptions. As we can see, these two whistleblowers all revealed the bad things that happened because of the government. As a communism country, government is the supreme. Everyone will be proud if they work for the government. I don’t know about the other communism countries, but China is like this. If someone is working for the government, he or she will have so much power. Five years ago, before Xi Jinping became the president of China, there were more corruptions happened. Even someone little officials could get the bribe from others. The newest updated rule on March 2016 promoted people to report, offered a greater protection for the whistleblowers. Also, the whistleblowers can get rewards between 200,000 RMB to 500,000 RMB. With this activity that president Xi is proceeding, people who involved in the corruption will be on caught to the jail and the length will be based on what the person did. As a result, the phenomena of corruptions are getting fewer and fewer. However, I think there are severer corruption or unethical things happens on the top level of the government. This reminds me about a news happened a few weeks ago. A kindergarten in Beijing was reported abuse children and fed them pills. Compared to the U.S.’s system on whistleblower, I think China has a long way to go to. China does not have a long history on whistle blowing. I think China can learn from U.S. on whistle blowing. If China wants to learn from the foreign countries, it needs to open itself first. As a child raised up in China, I think China is more and more closed. This doesn’t mean on the economic side but on the freedom of speech. In China, people cannot login to Facebook, Instagram or even Google’s webpage. Even last summer, VPN, which is a tool used to connect to the foreign website is banned in China. People in China can only use the Chinese apps and websites to see the news. So how can people get the news from outside? Nowadays, the only way is to look at the articles written by the Chinese editors. There must have some differences from the news that directly written in another country. Some information will be added or deleted, because the government doesn’t want the citizens to know. Sometimes when I looked at the same news, the article that posted on the U.S. website are somewhat different from the report posted on Chinese website. I have the chance to study abroad both in the U.S. and U.K., so I have the opportunity to learn so much from the other countries.
