Fighting With Courage
Imagine killing people in an arena for money, food, and glory. This is what Katniss Everdeen has to do in the book The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins. Courage is basically showing your strength when you are faced with tough decisions or fear. Katniss shows how courageous she is while battling in the arena and out of the arena with her family and friends. Katniss has to go into an arena with twenty-four other members, two from each district. There are a total of twelve districts and she is in the twelfth district. The point of the games is to show the the capital is the boss of them and whatever they say goes. They battle in an arena till there is one victor remaining. Katniss shows many acts of courage.

She keeps arguing with Peeta whether or not she is going to go or not. Katniss wants to go and Peeta is saying she is going to stay behind. Peeta says “No, you’re not risking your life for me.”(274). Then Katniss lies and says she’s not going but really she just gives him spoonfuls of a syrup which actually makes him sleep so Katniss can sneak out and grab the medicine. Once she grabs the medicine Clove is saying that Cato, is out there hunting for Peeta. Clove said “I don't think you'll have much use for your lips anymore, want to blow Lover Boy one last kiss?”(286). When she gets back to Peeta she gives him the medicine and when they wake up it is much better than what it was before. “Much better, whatever you shot into my arm did the trick.”(291). Said Peeta. Katniss showed great bravery and courage when she ran out into the middle trying to grab that pack filled with supplies including the medicine.

She shares her struggle when she shares, "Rue's death has forced me to confront my own fury against the cruelty, the injustice they inflict upon us. But here, even more strongly than at home, I feel my impotence. “There's no way to take revenge on the Capitol. Is there?” (Collins 1364). This part of the journey continues when she finds Peeta inured. Katniss constantly risks her life to get resources to help bring Peeta back to health. These kinds of feelings could also be due to deindividuation, which means that when in a crowd a person behaves in a way that they would never behave if they were not in this crowd (Aronson et al., 2013, p. 247). Under the circumstances that Katniss has been forced into, she is doing things that she would not normally do, like kissing Peeta as she is watched by all 12 districts or almost committing suicide while still inside the arena. People tend to adapt to their surroundings and when others around them are doing crazy and unimaginable things, like killing to survive, then they follow suit.
In addition, at the end of the Games, Katniss and Peeta are left with the question of either killing each other or both killing themselves. Collins says that after everyone is killed, the decision of the victor of the Hunger Games lies between Katniss and Peeta, both tributes from District Twelve; even though either tribute would be willing to give up their life for the other, they both decide to kill themselves after becoming fed up with the Games (344-345). Peeta and Katniss are so emotionally unstable from everything they have experienced with the Games that they both choose to die with each other. Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
Katniss’ courage grows throughout the novel. In the middle of the Hunger Games, Katniss forms an alliance with Rue, the tribute from District 11. After Rue’s death, Katniss moves away as she is extremely upset with the Capitol for holding the Games. She thought, ‘I want to do something, right here right now, to shame them … to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do, there is a part of every tribute they can’t own… ’ Katniss displays an act of defiance as she wants to ‘shame them.’ Her defiance requires her to be courageous in the Games and face the trials and challenges that she will have to experience. Courage is important because without courage the tributes wouldn’t be able to get through the games, they wouldn’t have the courage to kill others. Courage is one of the most important qualities when being a tribute in the hunger games because you need courage to do things that scare you like kill another or survive if you haven’t got the courage and will power to survive you’re going to die as soon as the countdown finishes. Katniss shows courage when she volunteers to take her sister’s spot in the hunger games. Katniss also shows courage when she goes and retrieves the bag with healing cream for Peeta. The Hunger Games was a good movie when it came out. This movie refers to a dystopia world in which there are 12 districts and a capitol who rules with an iron fist, in which the districts must provide a tribute to fight in an annual Hunger Game as a punishment for a past rebellion. Katniss Everdeen is a hunter from the 12th district, which Gale, her friend gives her tips on hunting. One day her sister, Primrose Everdeen, is chosen for the Hunger Games, and in order to save her, she volunteers instead to serve in the Games along with Peeta Mellark. During a TV interview, Peeta confesses her love for Katniss Everdeen, which causes the enragement of the latter; however, she later forgives him as he explains to her that it was only to gain sponsors. During the Hunger Games, she did not receive a lot of supplies except some medicine to cure a wound, but Districts 1 and 2 almost won the Game due to their training, and amount of supplies which Katniss destroys but cannot recover any of them. The Hunger Games was one of the best movies I ever watched because it has a little bit of everything and it captures the real-life survival game that we live on a daily basis.
In the novel The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins a new country is created. Panem is born in place of North America, were the Hunger Games began. In the Hunger Games, there are 24 tributes. Tributes are people who live in the districts. The tributes in the Hunger Games are all the same. They kill one another and become the Capitols puppets. The tributes become violent, emotionless puppets. Then there is Katniss. Katniss is an excellent hunter and becomes lethal during the games. However, she has not lost her compassion. Katniss does not think of herself as a good person. When in reality she is a good person with a large heart, who puts others before herself.
Underestimated by her competitors, she was able to rise her way to the top by pulling out he secret weapons. Her hunting abilities, problem solving skills, and ability to think on the spot may not seem like super powers; however, they helped her survive and win the hunger games. Like Tris, Katniss also had a supernatural aid. Peeta was able to help Katniss make it through the games and they both made it out alive. Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing. Another way teens can relate to the hunger games is through the love triangle. Some of us might have a similar situation of where we might like two people. In the movie it says, “What I need is not Gales fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. After accomplishing the impossible and defying the Capitol in the process, she returns home a heroine. Katniss becomes the symbol for uprisings and rebellions, and is looked up to by many. Nobody had accomplished what she had, and it says a lot about Katniss Everdeen as a heroine. In the end, Katniss and Peeta are crowned by President Snow as co-victors of the Hunger Games.
In The Hunger Games, the main character named Katniss finds her own way around the games. Katniss is not the person who likes to kill, she tried her best to kill as few people as possible, yet not get herself killed. Katniss hated the idea of the hunger games, so she wanted to try to find a way to stop it. Over the course of many books/movies, Katniss was able to go her own way and rebel against the rich people. She was unique, Katniss was able to get many people to respect her and help her fight against the rich. Like any other person, Katniss could have just followed the instructions given to her to be safe. However, this is not who she is, Katniss stuck up for what she believed in. She had a decision to defeat the rich and try to end the games, and she stuck to it. There are many movies and books in the arts that show people not following the crowd. The Hunger Games is an astonishing reading experience that propels the reader to feel the emotions expressed by the characters throughout the novel. These emotions were expertly developed by Suzanne Collins to create an atmosphere of compassion and understanding. Katniss Everdeen was affected by turning points which caused great adversity, demonstrated her resilience and also discipline as a human being. While others would’ve backed down and gave up, Katniss persevered to accomplish her goals no matter the situation. Volunteering as tribute, losing her sister-like friend Rue and threatening her own life for the benefit of all the districts are all examples of turning points.
