Music has evolved so much in the past fifty years and is probably one of the most used entertainment resource for people. From rap, hiphop, reggae, country, drum and bass, dubstep, trap, music is listened to everyday. Music is used for various reasons, such as, inspirations, boyfriend and girlfriend breakups, hate towards one other, love, drugs, etc. Music artists, like rapper and songwriter Schoolboy Q, Lil Wayne, YG, Niki Manaj use music to their advantage to disrespect women by using vulgar and derogatory language. A music writer and fan of hip-hop, Joan Morgan, in her article about music lyrics and rappers “From Fly-Girls To Bitches and Hoes” states, “I have to wonder if there isn’t something inherently unfeminist in supporting a music that repeatedly reduces me to tits and ass” (455). Artists today really degrade the value of women and tend to feel as if they are more of a man when they speak down on women than when they don’t. This paper will show the negative outcomes rap artist have on women, black communities and children.
Music writer and fan of hip-hop Joan Morgan, in her collection of essays, When Chickenheads Come Home to Roast: A Hip-Hop Feminist Breaks It Down, 1999, argues that women often are disrespected in the lyrics of some rap artists. She also argues that rappers are having a negative effect on the community of african americans. Towards the middle of her essay Morgan states, “I hear brothers talking about spending each day high as hell on malt liquor and Chronic”(456). In other words, Morgan believes that the artist talking about getting drunk and smoking chronic is the “cool” thing to do, and that it is the life to live. The negative outcomes that rappers have on women, black communities and children results in pregnant mothers, suicide, murder, drugs, alcohol and rape. If rappers would stop with the vulgar and derogatory language they have for women then it could change the whole perspective. Some argue that it isn’t too serious and that all music isn’t like that, but when you have children using the word “bitch” to describe a women, friend or family member it says a lot. When you have black communities trying to kill each other over money and drugs it only has a negative effect.
