Fragile X syndrome is a sex-linked chromosomal abnormality that is more common in males than in females and is also less problematic of the majority of females. The presence of an abnormality in the X chromosome causes Fragile X syndrome. It becomes constricted and often breaks. There are some different outcomes that can occur within a person with fragile X syndrome. Mental retardation, learning disability, and anxiety can all be linked to fragile X syndrome. Many behavioral and cognitive problems occur as well. Fragile X syndrome is a lifelong condition, but treatments have been sought for the disorder and can better the lives of individuals who have it. The majority of individuals that have Fragile X syndrome can live a normal life span. Individuals with the disorder display some behavioral and physical features such as large ears, long and narrow faces, poor eye contact, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and about 1 in 3 males meet the criteria for autistic disorder (Hagerman, Berry Kravis & Kaufmann, 2009). Fragile X syndrome occurs nearly twice as much in males than in females. The disorder occurs in approximately one in four thousand births for males, and one in eight thousand births for females (“Fragile X Syndrome,” 2014). Males with the disorder will display mild to moderate intellectual disability the majority of the time, while the majority of females with the disorder will have a normal IQ, but may also still have behavioral and cognitive problems. It is thought that in females, the extra X chromosome negates the effect of the abnormal chromosome, which is why this abnormality is more common in males than in females(Hagerman, Berry Kravis & Kaufmann, 2009). This may also be why a female does not display as... ... middle of paper ... ...in diagnosing the behavioral problems an individual may have and can accurately prescribe a medication. Fragile X syndrome is a lifelong chromosomal disorder, but if treated early and correctly an individual can live a somewhat normal life span. Behavioral problems can try to be controlled by therapies and certain medication so that the patient can try to live a more comfortable lifestyle. Therapies and medication are used to maximize the individual’s intelligence early in life. Females and males experience different effects with this disorder and it is quite interesting to see why and how. Fragile X syndrome is inherited. Somebody can be a carrier of the gene and not actually be living with the disorder. Although, we have come a long way in the medical field, chromosomal disorders are tricky and I’m not too sure there will ever actually be a cure in our lifetime.
As a result, I am learning how to assist clients without labeling the client and developing a proper diagnosis. Assessing client problems should happen throughout the counseling process. In the beginning, counselors get background information on their clients to help the counselor develop a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Correct diagnosis of clients is vital to receive reimbursement from insurance companies for counseling services. Assessments help the counselor determine an appropriate treatment for the client. Assessments can help clients realize their strengths and weaknesses (Whiston, 2017). Helping the client understand their strengths can assist the client in building confidence, reach the clients counseling goal, and implement healthy choices in the client’s
The fetus in utero may show signs of slow growth and organs may not develop correctly. After birth there can be physical defects evidenced by a smooth skin surface between upper lip and nose, the nose may be upturned, wide set eyes and an extremely thin upper lip. The head may be small in circumference and brain size, deformities of the joints, vision and hearing problems, heart defects and problems with bones and kidneys. There may be problems with the central nervous system and brain, including poor memory and judgement, learning disorders, delayed development, poor coordination and/or balance and hyperactivity or jitteriness, and mood swings. Children born with FAS may have difficulty is school, have poor social skills, have trouble adapting to change, lack impulse control, unable to stay on task and find it hard to plan or work towards a goal. The severity and negative effects range from subtle to serious, they are always
A genetic disorder is a sickness caused by one or many abnormalities or absentees in the genes or chromosomes. One interesting genetic disorder such as cancer, are found genetic but, can also be caused and affected by many by environmental factors such as being exposed to asbestos which may increase the risk of lung cancer and many other cancers. While on the other hand most disorders like Williams Syndrome are genetic and are primarily rare and only affect a limited amount of people about one in every several thousand. Because it is a genetic disorder that is estimated between 1 in 10,000 people worldwide, primarily caused by a micro-deletion on the seventh chromosome is what indicates the disorder being Williams Syndrome.
...sorders on the spectrum such as AS. Several of the sources used in the composition of this paper refer to the belief that Autism is a form of “extreme male brain”, an exaggeration of male traits caused by high levels of testosterone while in utero. In spite of the disparity between the two genders, there are girls struggling with this disorder, and they often experience more severe symptoms than their male counterpart (Rudacille).
Diagnosing a patient with a personality disorders where often evaluations done by a clinician. The clinician would listen to the importance of interpersonal experiences and observing the patients behavior in a consulting room (Westen, 2001). This was normally done in one session, if the patient informed the clinician of harming himself. The clinician would diagnose the patient as a borderline personality disorders.
One of the most characteristic features of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is its prominent higher prevalence among the male gender in comparison with the female gender. Although rates of ASD are consistent across cultures, these rates vary significantly by gender. It is the male gender that seems to be more affected by ASD with an average male-to-female ratio of 4.2:1, affecting 1 in 70 males and only 1 in 315 females (Fombonne, 2009). Although a well-known fact, the causes for such a great difference among sex ratios still remains unexplained, there are several hypotheses and studies trying to explain the reason for this inequality. In this paper I will outline some of the different attempts to explain the differences between the sex ratios. Among these attempts we can find diverse hypotheses that vary from the role of the sex hormones and genetic vulnerability to the biases of medical professionals during the diagnostic process (Goldman, 2013).
Psychiatrists are physicians who help patients with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of any mental disorder. Psychiatrists can treat patients with a range of disorders from mild anxiety, to people with severe disorders that can cause dangerous behavior to anyone with a mental retardation, to anyone also suffering with alcoholism. Psychiatrists can also prescribe drugs to their patients because they are physicians. They undergo many years of training to be able to recognize the connection between mental disorders and physical disorders. Psychiatrists can work with their patients in their own private offices or in hospitals and clinics. Psychiatrists can also teach in medical school or research and study the causes and treatments ...

Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.
Clinical psychologists can treat a wide range of patients, from mental disorders to emotional problems. To get an easier and simpler idea of what a clinical psychologist does, Ferguson's Career Guidance Center's definition gives a good picture of a clinical psychologist’s job description, “Clinical psychologists concern themselves with people's mental and emotional disorders. They assess and treat problems ranging from normal psychological crises, such as adolescent rebellion or middle-age loss of self-esteem, to extreme conditions, such as severe depression and schizophrenia.”According to Careers in Psychology, a clinical psychologist has three main jobs, to assess the patient, diagnose disorders, and recommend a possible treatment. When a clinical psychologist assesses a patient it usually involv...

He published a comprehensive medical description of the syndrome. It was not until 1959, that it became clear the syndrome was due to lack of sex chromosome material. Turner's Syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder that affects one in approximately 2,500 females. Females normally have two X-chromosomes. However, in those with Turner's Syndrome, one X chromosome is absent or is damaged.
... properly interact and communicate well with their clients, they need to be emotionally intelligent, self aware, create a therapeutic relationship and develop reflective practices. All of the above contributes to an individual’s health and so it’s very important that we are able to control our emotions, correct and learn from our mistakes, examine and balance our life and create a therapeutic environment so that our clients feel comfortable, safe and trust us enough to live their life in our hands.
Many associate psychology with sitting in a chair in a small office as someone taking notes, asking how you feel about a certain event or feeling, analyzing your deepest secrets and memories. However, it branches off into many other fields. A clinical psychologist’s main job is “to reduce the distress and improve the psychological wellbeing of clients” (Bond). This can include anything from depression, eating disorders, and addiction, to mental illness, family and personal relationships, and learning disabilities (Bond). A clinical psychologist usually will choose to have an emphasis in a certain field such as children and learning disabilities and work in schools or social work facilities, or mental illness and work in a hospital (Bond). According to Vicki Cohen, people “typically are referred or come to therapy because they have a symptom”. These are defined by emotional, social, and or physiological.
