What is cloud storage?
Cloud storage is the storage of data online in the cloud. The data is maintained, managed and backed up on a remote server by a cloud storage service provider. It is made available to users over a network, normally the internet. There are three main cloud storage models:
• Public cloud storage is a cloud storage model that allows companies and individuals to store edit and manage data. This is based on a remote cloud server and is accessed over the internet. The providers charge the user a set amount, where the user pays for the storage capacity being used. The storage provider hosts, manages and sources the storage infrastructure to many different users at one time.
• Private cloud storage is an environment protected by an organizations firewall. The storage provider has infrastructure in the organizations data centre which they also manage.
• Hybrid cloud storage is a combination of both of public and private cloud storage models. It works by placing some of the critical data on the organizations private cloud and the other data stored and accessible from a public storage provider.
Capabilities
Cloud storage can be used for many different functions by an individual or company. No matter which type of storage you pick (Public, Private or Hybrid), there is the option to increase the storage area of you own servers by putting the majority of your data into a Cloud Storage provider. This will make a large amount of space on your servers you might need to update your current applications or software.

Data centers have seen many different types of storage thought years from huge drums to tapes to today’s flash storage. Many of today’s data centers uses some form of RAID on a SAN to house the network’s storage. Virtualization has also help change how data center use and manage storage because before a data center would have many different hard drives for each system but with the RAID as being a part of virtualization, data centers can have multiple hard drive but act as one hard drives. In addition to RAID, virtualize storage has also open the door to off-site “Cloud” based storage for data centers to utilize. Today, data centers can have on-site virtualize servers but have the servers’ hard drives be located on a “cloud” base storage platform as the main storage location or even a backup location for the servers’
Cloud computing is a way to increase the capabilities of a device or add new capabilities or services without making any hardware changes to the device. An example is if you are traveling and along the way you stop and power on your laptop to check your email. Some of the key cloud computing services being offered today address data storage. Storing important information and files in the cloud can ensure that they are available for years to come and can be accessed globally wherever Internet connectivity is available. Through cloud computing a handheld device, such as a table computer, can access the Internet, check email, purchase concert tickets or monitor a webcam on another continent. Computation and software are also two other key areas of cloud computing.

Cloud computing services are online services, which store this information to a safe and secure location online. It’s offered a quicker, easier and safer backup than conventional methods of file storage such as bookshelves or cardboard files.
In cloud computing, the word cloud is used as a metaphor for “the internet”. So the cloud computing means “a type of internet-based computing”, where different services such as servers, storage and applications are delivered to an organization’s computers and devices through the internet.
