Introduction Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities. It is the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself. Boyd and Ellison define a web-based social networking site as a service that allows users to: “(1) Construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system; (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection; and, (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system” (2008, pg. 211). The top five social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google+. There are pros and cons of social networking. Some pros of social networking are increased criminal prosecution because of social media, social networking creates new social connections, students are doing better in school, better quality of life, and social media can be used as a source of employment. Police departments troll social media to search for criminals who are foolish enough to brag about their crimes online. Social networking is a great way to connect with relatives from out of town as well as new people in foreign countries. Statistics show that 57% of teens are making new friendships on social media sites. Students are doing better in school because with access to the Internet 50% have reported using social networking technologies to discuss schoolwork. Facebook has support groups where members discuss their health conditions and resources relevant to their conditions while creating strong support networks. The best social media site to use, as a source of employment is LinkedIn. Facebook privacy and security have many benefits, problems, and challenges. There is a benefit for every security setting on Facebook but the real concern comes along when it comes to facing the problem and how this problem goes into different steps of challenges, and how we can fix that problem in order for privacy not to be a huge issue. A person that has access to Facebook wants to share their everyday moments to the world such as sharing personal posts, photos and videos, and that’s what Facebook is basically known for.

Many individuals who participate on social networking sites believe that these sites are beneficial to “our society”. However many other people beg to differ and consider these sites becoming more of a threat than something that is beneficial to our children and teenagers (“Social,” n.d.). Individuals and teenagers claim that social networking is a great place to communicate in regards to their education or personal interests. Whereas, parents argue that networking is dangerous because it’s not secure, it’s a main source to bully one another, online sexual predators try to seek out the young, and teens detach themselves from the real world (Carey, n.d.).
With the advancement in technology in a short matter of time it has impacted the world in many ways such as how the world communicates and our life styles. One of the many revolutionary inventions or evolutions is called social networking sites (SNS). Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and many more, are where people gather in the internet, create a personalized profile about themselves, and interact with people around the world. With the lack of parental supervision between the ages of fourteen to seventeen, which makes one of largest demographics using social networking sites, these teens could be subjected to mature elements. Young teens between the ages of fourteen to seventeen should not be allowed to have a profile on social networking sites because they do not have the capability to make proper logical decisions.

Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.

In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
In the end, social networking is the act of expanding one’s social circle by connecting other individuals, specifically in relation with the use of the Internet. It is rather common to find individuals of all ages using social sites to stay in-contact with others. While many can argue that social networking is more beneficial for teens, studies prove that the use of such forms of communication can negatively affect the lives of teens anywhere through its ability to create interpersonal and intrapersonal trials.

However, much like any other part of the internet, social networks can be frought with serious security risks, both for your person, and your data.
Social networking is doing more harm than good in society, if traditional and personal interactions continue to be replaced with conversations through online networking sites, it won’t be long before they are perceived as the ‘norm’. Traditional methods of interaction will continue to be at risk if the effects of social media are not realised. Social networking sites were created as a means of making it easier for individuals to communicate in a timely and efficient manner, they were not created to take over face-to-face communications altogether. The constant use of online networking is doing more harm than good not only individually, similarly through the community

A social network is a website that brings people together to talk, share ideas and interests, or make new friends. Some believe social networks harm the society because it’s a waste of time and can be very dangerous; however it can be a very useful tool like staying in touch with family and finding out about the news.
