What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free service from Google which provides a core set of statistics and analytical tools for website administrators to perform the tasks of web analysts such as search engine optimisation and marketing purposes. It uses an advanced technology that can gather vast amount of data to help measure how the company's presence and online marketing is working.

This powerful software has the ability to track website metrics, like the number of visits and visitors, number of specific pages viewed, bounce rate, and abandonment rate. One of its more outstanding features is its ability to track certain website pages, referred to as “goal”, which can identify what visitor actions you want to monitor. “Goals” can track how long the website is visited, what specific location within the website, each action the visitor does during the visit which includes social media shares, ad clicks and video plays, and which pages a unique visitor view in a single visit.

Google Analytics collate valuable information which can build the paths that users take as they browse a web site. A set of funnel pages can be configured for each “goal” leading up to the “goal” page. Google Analytics first analyses how many users are following the funnel, then it analyses where users are stopping or getting lost or just leaving the website. In this way, website administrators can make their sites more effective by helping visitors reach their “goals.”
