Erectile dysfunction is believed to be purely an age disorder by many; but, in all reality, it can be due to many issues affecting the man suffering from ER. It may be caused or worsened by mental or psychological issues, pre-existing physical diseases or disorders, or even relationship problems. ER may be diagnosed by a few tests performed by your current family doctor or a specialist, these tests are painless and may be used together to find exactly why one may be suffering from erectile dysfunction. No matter what the outcome of the tests, there are treatments that can help; these include alternative treatments, home remedies, medications, and steps to prevention.
The earliest treatment of erectile dysfunction was mainly oral medications from the medieval Muslim era by Muslim physicians. In the 9th through the 16th century, physicians would attempt to treat ER by inserting medications through the urethra for a more direct application. In the 1800’s, sheep testis was injected into the site to replenish the lost testosterone that was to be believed the only cause for this disorder. It was not until the 1940’s that testosterone was purified into what it is today. Dr. John R. Brinkley was the first to recommend implanting glands from goats into the penis surgically in 1920-1930. In 1970 the inflatable penile implants were invented using Brinkley’s concept. In 1960, Geddings Osbon, invented what is known today as a penis pump; which is a quick, non-surgical, temporary fix.
“Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man can no longer get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Having erection trouble from time to time isn’t necessarily a cause for concern, only if it is an ongoing problem” (Mayo Clinic). Symp...

...nseling may be helpful for men that have emotional problems and many times are recommended to bring their partner for communication help and support. Many support groups offer help connecting with others with the same type of erectile dysfunction. One should never assume it is something they will have to live with for the rest of their life, nor is it life-threatening. Support groups also help eliminate the stress and anxiety caused by ER. “Whether the cause is physical, psychological, or a combination of both, erectile dysfunction can become a source of mental and emotional stress for you and your partner” (Mayo Clinic).

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common ailments that affect aging men. Statistics show that more than half of the entire male population aged 65 have some form of BPH, while about 90 percent of men aged 85 have the condition. Every year, in the United States alone, about a quarter of a million surgeries are performed to correct BPH. As they name implies, BPH is a non-malignant growth of the prostate, the gland that secretes semen, the fluid that transports sperm. Although not harmful, BPH can bring about symptoms that could largely affect the quality of life of its sufferers.
First, it is important to distinguish the difference between sexuality and sensuality. When some people think of sexuality, the brain automatically thinks orgasms and penetration. But, when we think about sensuality, all of the senses become engaged. Touch, taste, smell, and feel can all become a form of foreplay. When you take foreplay or sensuality out of the equation, “couples have no way of intimately connecting unless they have sex” (Markman et al., 2010, p.272). This can introduce pressure to the sexual relationship which will also allow room for anxiety. “Numerous studies suggest that anxiety is the key inhibiting factor to arousal” (Markman et al., 2010, p. 277). There are two types of anxiety - performance anxiety and conflict. When a person is focusing soley on his or her performance, Markman et al., (2010) suggests that it puts “emotional distance between you and your partner. This kind of detachment can lead to the most common sexual problems that people experience” (p. 277). A few of these problems are difficulty having an orgasm, lack of erection or arousal, and pre-ejaculation. Conflict is the other source for anxiety. When a couple is arguing all the time and having trouble getting along, the desire for intimacy is lost. “It is important that you agree to keep problems and disagreements off-limits when you are being sensual or making love” (Markman et al., 2010, p. 278). If your partner has a complete lack of interest in sex, it can be a side effect of a hidden issue. It can be a stressful time at work, he or she could be depressed, drinking, or suffering from another type of illness that affect one’s sex drive. Try to figure out if it is health related, and if it is not, then look more at the
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is an inherited condition that affects hormone production in the adrenal gland. The individual lacks enzymes to make cortisol, and hormones are instead are shifted away to make other hormones, specifically androgens. This results in the deficiency of cortisol and the abundance of testosterone.
Our text describes pedophilia as a person who “gains sexual gratification by watching, touching, or engaging in sexual acts with prepubescent children, usually 13 years old or younger” (Comer, 2013, p. 411). The movie, The Woodsman describes the story of a convicted sex offender recently released from prison. Walter, depicted by Kevin Bacon shed some insight into the motivations and thought processes that a sex offender, specifically a pedophile might have.
The scientific study of human sexual behavior conducted by Alfred Kinsey led to a sexual revolution. Globally, people were able to open up about the topic and use it as a source of information. “Kinsey” allowed the audience to obtain a better grasp about conducting scientific study and his personal life. Even though his research methods have been called upon question and controversy, he changed people’s lives.
Supporting Evidence for Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy Initial EFT Research – the 1980’s The evidence base for Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) contains a rich history of research not only by its founders, but also by a wide range of professionals within the fields of counseling and psychology. Johnson and Greenberg (1985) first examined the effectiveness of the EFT model by comparing the outcomes of EFT treated couples to those of couples treated in a traditional problem-solving manner. Through newspaper recruitment and subsequent assessment interviews, 45 couples were chosen to participate in a study in which 15 were randomly assigned to EFT treatment, 15 to cognitive-behavioral problem-solving treatment, and 15 to a control group receiving no treatment. Six measures were utilized, including the Test of Emotional Styles (ES), the Couples Therapy Alliance Scale (AS), the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), Target Complaints (TC), Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), and the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships Inventory (PAIR).
Sex is a beautiful thing that happens between two people, but sometimes sex can become addictive, and like with any other addiction, it can ruin lives. Patricia is in her mid-thirties, and to those who know her, she is a soccer mom with a successful career. But after her marriage ended due to her husband’s affair, Patricia became insecure, and started exploring dating sites on the internet – soon, Patricia was going on dates, sex dates - and in an interview with the Philadelphia Weekly, she admits that she is addicted to sex, and there is a problem. The American Psychiatric Association and Diagnostic (APAD) and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) don’t recognize the abuse of sex as an addiction. Although not recognize as an addiction, the abuse of sex has the same qualities as drug addiction and should be recognized as a medical condition.
During the course of any job, a person may possibly encounter things that might shock them. Many men and women who choose the career of being a police officer may often receive Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the levels of violence they see throughout their daily lives. If a person has already suffered from traumatic experiences before in their lives, they can be at a greater risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Risk, 2010). Police officers who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can also act differently towards citizens and in other aspects of their job. In lots of cities there can be a great number of police officers who will get PTSD from their careers in law enforcement. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder also effects the way a person lives, acts and how they will continue their lives after something disturbing has happened. There are various ways a person can develop this disorder and various ways to live with it.
“PTSD was first brought to public attention in relation to war veterans, but it can result from a variety of traumatic incidents, such as mugging, rape, torture, being kidnapped or held captive, child abuse, car accidents, train wrecks, plane crashes, bombings, or natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes.” (NIMH)
Life comes with many challenging obstacles that entirely change the foundation of our very lives. Among these obstacles are situations that can be difficult to cope with. Everyone has a different way of dealing with these situations. Feeling nervous, fatigued, finding it difficult to sleep and having your thought process scrambled are all normal reactions to traumatic events. Usually these symptoms decrease over time and everyone returns to the lives they had before the experience. However, when this is not the case, the individual is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
...cases the pain may be chronic and severe. Most of the time, pain is relieved by taking anti-inflammatory drugs or other medications. Very rarely, an injection called a spermatic cord block can be used to deaden the pain temporarily. Vasectomy reversal is very rarely needed to relieve pain permanently. Very rarely, the cut ends of a tube grow back together. This most often happens within four months of the operation and may allow pregnancy to happen. Decreased sexual desire or an inability to have an erection occurs in 4 out of 1,000 cases. The most likely cause is emotional there is no physical cause for sexual dysfunction associated with vasectomy.

While the symptoms are all the same, many different names have been attributed to menopause-like symptoms in males. Some physicians use the term “SLOH” or “Symptomatic Late Onset Hypogonadism” to describe andropause while others who prefer to label it a deficiency refer to it as ‘”ADAM” or “androgen deficiency of the male”. Whether or not andropause should be treated depends on one’s physician’s opinion on the matter. Some believe that andropause is a natural state that all aging males undergo and that it shouldn’t be treated as a medical abnormality while others believe that there are considerable positive effects of hormone therapy. Supporters of hormone therapy do not agree with the idea that lower hormone levels are simply a natural process of aging. They point out that as life expectancy has increased, so has the need to treat aging-related hormonal shifts. In order to form an opinion on whether andropause should be considered a treatable disease, it’s important to understand its physiological process and an underlying condition known as “adrenopause”.
In today’s society, not able to get or maintain an erection is a real problem with men.
There can be many reasons for the issues. It can be a disease such as diabetes, substance abuse, medication, or even a psychological issue that causes the sexual dysfunction. I have had and experience with a man who had erectile dysfunction. (Impotency) Not only was his caused from diabetes, but also the fear of not being able to perform contributed to the issue. Women experience sexual dysfunction as well. Menopause can contribute to sexual dysfunction in women. Many women have to use lubrications because their body does not produce adequate lubrication for intercourse. The book states that people with spinal cord injuries can have sex lives. I was actually surprised by this. I could not imagine desiring to be sexually active if I were in a wheelchair. I think I would feel useless if that were the case and would have little desire to do much of anything. However, I have never been faced with that so I am unsure as to how I would
