Down syndrome is genetic disorder caused by presence of extra chromosome in 21st or third copy of chromosome in DNA. ‘It occurs about 1 in every 1000 live births’ (encyclopedia Britannica, 2014). The actual defect is an additional chromosome is established during cell development and the abnormal development results in 47 chromosomes rather than the normal 46(23pairs) chromosomes. Therefore, this extra chromosome causes problems in adolescent/child physical and mental development (encyclopedia Britannica, 2014). There is no cure for Downs Syndrome but this essay will discuss the Down syndrome causes, physical characteristics effects on Down syndrome child and possible control in-patient with down syndromes, which can help the sufferers to live active life. Having one extra chromosome in number 21 causes Down syndrome. This genetic disorder is called non-disjunction (Roizen, Nancy et al. 2003). When one cell get divides in two, the pair of chromosome get separated so that one from the par goes to one cell and another from the pair goes to other cell (Roizen, Nancy et al. 2003). While in this process, when the both chromosomes from pair go into one cell and no chromosomes left for that pair to go into the other cell. This represents that something has gone wrong; hence, this cause the Downs syndrome (Roizen, Nancy et al. 2003). Physical characteristics on Down’s syndrome child have various effects. Children with downs syndrome can be prone to have breathing problems due to the smallness of the mouth and the poor development of the sinuses.
