What Woman Do for Beauty

Before makeup, women used strange methods to enhance their natural beauty. They would use burnt matches to darken their eyes, berries to color their lips, and boys’ pee to fade their freckles. That’s not it either, they would ingest ox blood and put leeches on their face because they believed those methods improved their skin by making them paler (Wheatley). In a woman’s lifetime, she spends about $15,000 on makeup. Out of the $15,000 spent on makeup, $3,770 is spent on mascara, $2,750 is spent on eye shadow, and $1,780 is spent on lipstick (Mychaskiw). Every woman who uses makeup has their favorite products they like to use every day. Five times a year, women who use makeup regularly will restock on those items. There are always pros and cons to everything, including makeup. Although, it’s not very healthy for skin, it can hide and cover imperfections. These imperfections include acne, acne scars, and discoloration anywhere on the skin. Covering these imperfections and insecurities can boost a persons’ confidence. The makeup that covers these imperfections is called foundation and concealer. These products are usually cream or powder based, and can include SPF protection from the sun and anti-wrinkle/blemish ingredients. Unfortunately, there are always cons. Makeup can clog pores and cause acne and imperfections on the skin. Also, it can set into deep wrinkles and cause further wrinkling in the future. If not used regularly, makeup can expire quickly. Once expired, if used, it can cause more severe imperfections, such as cystic acne (Mychaskiw). For certain people, another con could be that some makeup brands test their makeup on animals. The FDA requires all over-the-counter makeup products to be tested on animals (Companie... ... middle of paper ... ...f these products are sitting on a shelf, or any other storage space, for a long period of time, they can pollute the environment they’re in. These toxins can enter the body in a number of ways. From entering through the pores, to inhaling or eating the makeup. Products with these harsh of chemicals and toxins are usually only found in over-the-counter beauty products, because of their long shelf life. The reason this isn’t taken as seriously is because it takes a long period of time for the effects to show, and cosmetics are not considered as dangerous as food or drugs (Danger That Hides in Makeup). When it comes to makeup, there is a wide variety of brands and prices for different products, but they’re all used for the same reason; to improve confidence. Makeup has been the main instinct to enhance beauty for a long time, and it seems like it will remain that way.
