After the Civil War, plans for Reconstruction, or mending the Union, were presented. After proposals by Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Wade and Henry Davis, and Andrew Johnson the nation went with Johnson’s plan after Lincoln was assassinated and Andrew Johnson became president. To rejoin the Union, the Confederate states had to go through a lengthy process. One segment of the process was to ratify the thirteenth amendment, which was legally kept throughout all of Reconstruction, but African Americans ended up working on large plantations for wealthy Southerners anyhow.
