Climate change is one of the biggest concerns for all nations across the globe over centuries. Climate shift refers to changes in patterns of weather which can be indicated through global warming, natural disasters and rise in sea level. There is a group of people, climate change skeptics, argue that climate change is not the result of human activity, meaning that it is naturally occurred. According to Slaght, this refers to internal factors which are the interaction between the atmosphere and ocean, and external factor, such as solar energy variations and volcanic eruption (John Slaght, 2009). Consequently, this essay aims to discuss the impacts of greenhouse gases on climate, and then the contribution of human to climate change and lastly, some statistics about the effects of global warming. Global warming is commonly caused by the excessive amount of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are the gases which work the same way as greenhouse, absorbing the heat radiation from the Sun and emitting it back to the Earth’s surface. This process is called greenhouse effect. In addition, greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapor, methane and Chlorofluorocarbon or commonly called CFCs. According to Mr. Steffen, “The primary cause of the observed changes in the Earth’s climate are human activities—mainly the burning of fossil fuels” (Steffen, 2013). The process of burning fossil fuel unleashes a huge amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, to the atmosphere, disturbing the balance of greenhouse gases in the nature. In this paper I will be showing evidence that relates climate change to humans. First of all what is climate change? Next what is the impact of carbon dioxide have to do with the warming the earth and how do we impact the carbon dioxide levels? Finally, how can we positively impact the fight against climate change?
Global climate change has been attributed to the accelerated collection and retention in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other so-called Green House Gases (GHG), such as methane, some of which are naturally occurring while some are man-made. Earth’s climate is determined by the physics and chemistry of its atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere consists of four layers; troposphere which is closest to earth, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere. Hardy says, “During the past 100 years we humans, as a result of burning coal, oil, and gas and clearing forests, have greatly changed the chemical composition of the thin atmospheric layer.” There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to burning fossil fuels. The atmosphere is made up of many gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. It also consists of trace gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbons and, ozone. The trace gases have the greatest effect on our climate (Hardy 5). Up to a certain level, these gases help to keep the planet warm by absorbing certain infrared wavelengths, so that there can be life on the planet. Thus, they trap heat in the troposphere and stop it from escaping to space (Hardy 7). Therefore, the greater amount of greenhouse gases, the more heat trapped in the atmosphere. Earth’s temperature is increasing due to increased levels of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide released into the air from burning fossil fuels.
