Introduction
What is teaching? What do we mean by quality education? What is the best way to motivate a child to reach their full potential? These are some of the questions that the effective teacher may ask themselves. In fact, much of the role of the modern teacher can be defined in the statement; Teaching – reflections, questions, decisions. These aspects are interwoven and iterative. Teachers need to reflect upon various policies, concepts and strategies. They need to ask the right questions and make the right decisions. The cycle continues. This assignment examines the role of the teacher with reference to professionalism and ethics, the teaching role and teaching strategies, classroom management and motivation.
Professionalism and Ethics
The foundations for becoming an effective teacher perhaps lie within professionalism and ethics. After all, this influences every single decision a teacher makes. Professionalism can be divided into six distinct categories; these are academic, legal, ethical, professional, personal and cultural professionalism. (Whitton et al., 2010) This is possibly a good starting point because teachers need to reflect upon what professionalism means for them and how it will affect their teaching practices.
For example, legal professionalism encompasses a whole range of aspects including duty of care, child protection, freedom of information, discipline, restraint, bullying and harassment, sexual assault and physical contact, discrimination and defamation. (Whitton et al., 2010) The list is vast and so are the implications. The effective teacher will need to keep their policy knowledge up to date. ...n conclusion, there are many facets to the effective teacher. Professionalism and ethics are of upmost importance and underpin the ethos of the teaching role. Moreover, the teacher must exhibit certain characteristics and focus on building quality relationships with the students. A range of teaching strategies should be utilized; in particular teachers need to be proficient in the use of questions. Planning is important in creating a safe and positive learning environment that incites a sense of belonging and managing misbehavior efficiently is vital. Motivation needs to be examined and understood with reference to the students in the class. Teachers need to reflect upon and question their own teaching practices and understanding of the policies and strategies available to them in order to make the best decisions for the children in their classroom under their care.
One of the first steps in of professionalism is dress; I make sure I am always dressed both professionally and comfortably for our classroom setting. For example if I know we are going to the Playscape, I wear either closed toed tennis or water shoes so I can get down and dirty and interacting with the children, really exploring the landscape. If I am wearing a dress I am conscious of how I sit or even go at step further and wear leggings underneath just so I don’t have to be worried. Another aspect of professionalism in the classroom is language. I always use appropriate language when speaking to the children, parents and my coworkers. Confidentiality is also a part of professionalism. Whenever I am taking notes or speaking of a child I am sure to keep it a confidential, I do not use names and am sure to only keep the information between the teaching team and I.

The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. Even though, the teacher and students schedules get occupied with the amount of work that needs to get done. There is still a way to reach out to a student or teacher if one of them is determined to do it can happen. Nowadays, it is easy to communicate between them both, so there should not be an excuse about not having the proper communication. Then, respect develops more between them. The teacher gives a clear act of respect toward the teacher; therefore, the student does the same for the teacher. There should not be special treatment or anything like that at all. All of these factors mentioned are descriptions of an effective teacher and good qualities that they must express while entering into the teaching profession; that is what makes a teacher
Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
First, I realized that, teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders and have great responsibilities. They have to balance the curriculum, students, parents, lesson plans, common core, and upper management and still maintain a professional demeanor. Second, educators must follow a strong code of ethics. They must be professional at all times with students and colleagues, keep confidentiality, not have or show any prejudice or bias, maintain safe and positive learning environments, help students with problems, and hand out disciplines accordingly. Lastly, I found that when you’re a teacher, your education never stops. Teachers are always trying to improve their own education and professional growth, both for the benefit of their students and for the benefit of themselves.
