What Makes A Education A Priority For All Of My Students?

As a teacher of students in special education programming in an urban setting, I believe that it is crucial to find ways to motivate students to learn, and to feel successful during their education process. I want to find ways to make education a priority for all of my students, something they find useful and applicable to their current life as well as their future. I want every student to feel that their cultural identities are being honored in the classroom and that they have opportunities to express their personal interests in the classroom environment. To begin to do this I work very hard to provide an environment that is consistent where students feel safe and respected despite varying differences in interest and ability levels. Classroom expectations are clear, and students participate in monitoring their own behavior as well as academic progress. I believe that students thrive in an environment where they know what to expect, and what is expected of them. I work hard to praise my students for even the smallest successes, as I believe that is what builds their confidence. During my time as a student intern, and during early career experiences I learned quickly that when students have a chance to express their concerns and interests, and are made to feel that what they have to say matters, it is much easier to build trusting relationships with students. I strive to gain the trust and respect of my students by getting to know the individual strengths, and areas of need both academically and emotionally for all students. Along with support in making content more accessible through alternate modes of instruction I would like more support in becoming more aware of different cultures and how the cultures are impacting student success. I would like to learn ways to involve families and the community in the classroom as well. The more support systems I can put in place for my students the more likely they are to be successful. I am excited to have the opportunity to be part of the Urban Education program at Davenport so that I will be able to provide a learning environment where all of my students can be successful, and meet their potential.
