So, you want to become a Movie Director? With becoming a Director, especially a Movie Director, comes many advantages and disadvantages. Advantages can be anything from gaining a great amount of salary annually, that you are your own “boss,” or that you get to dream for a living. Some of the disadvantages are that Directors work irregular hours, they have very stressful work, and it requires lots of skill. To start out though, what are Movie Directors duties? They have to select a script or an idea for a movie. As Steven Spielberg says, “It all starts with the script: it's not worth taking myself away from my family if I don't have something I'm really passionate about.” Basically, what he means is if you don’t have a script, you don’t have a movie, therefore, just go home. Some more jobs that they must do is select a casting director to find a cast, to make sure that a project stays on track as far as time and money, and they also tell the actors what they have to do to make the movie better. Well, as they say in Hollywood, “Let’s get this show on the road!” Advantage number 1, is that being a Movie Director can bring in a boat load of cash, if you’re good at it. According to The United States Department of Labor, Directors can get on average, about $68,000 a year. Now you have to remember that that is the minimum. If you’re one of the best Directors in the world, such as Steven Spielberg, then you might get paid upwards $330,000,000 a year. If you think that crazy, then you won’t believe that per second, he makes $47.74, per minute he makes $2,864.58, and per hour he makes $171,875. Now, onto advantage number 2, which is that you would be your own boss. Just think, that while there can be anywhere from 1 to 1,000 other people working on the movie, that you have the all complete power. This can also be bad, because if the movie ends up being a flop, people point fingers at you because you made all the production critiques. Advantage number 3, which is the final advantage, is that you get to dream for a living! Steven Spielberg himself says, “I dream for a living.” The coolest thing, I feel, about being a Movie Director, is that in the end, the movie is your dream and imagination.
In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
The reason why movies are so expensive to produce, market and distribute is that there is a long list of people involved in the process of filmmaking. Producers, writers, directors, actors, technical crews, film crews, set designers, costume designers, hair stylists and makeup artists, are some of the people who need to be paid whose names are seen as the credits roll at the end of any film. Not to mention the overhead costs of a myriad of equipment, props and the costumes themselves required in the production of a film. There are travel, food and shelter expenses if a movie is filmed on location and not in a Hollywood studio (there is a fee to use studio space as well). Once the actual filming of a movie is completed, more people are involved in editing, special effects and sound. These expenses are dependent on the sophistication of the technology and expertise. Additionally, and most costly is the marketing and distribution of a film.
Now that we have a script, and we'll cut out the process of submitting it to movie studios, the next step would be pre-production. For this purpose, we'll use a fictional studio and call it L 0 L studios. This studio, after accepting the script, would hire a producer. Let's use a name here, like Richard Donner. His job is to hire a director, audition a cast, find a location to film, or decide if it can be done on a sound stage (possibly both), and try to keep it all under budget. Our director would be James Cameron, because with his success recently, his name alone would bring people to see this movie, which is the whole goal of the project. Casting is difficult, because certain factors have to be looked at, such as looks, (do they look the part?
Breaking into the movie industry was a very literal thing for Spielburg. He started out working in a janitor closer, that he cleaned up and turned into an office. While in production with Amblin, they won him several film festival awards, and got him attention of Universal Studios. Not only does he direct movie; he also directs television sitcoms.
After the director and producer sign onto the project, the next job is the hiring of the plot writers. The director approves or disapproves what they write and make them make the necessary changes – they may fire some or hire some more but at the end, the director picks the script or even in some cases, they write the script. After the script is complete, the budget yet again is evaluated and fixed upon the seeing the script or the script is fixed to accommodate the budget. A sample of the official script is given to those who decide to cast for specific characters in which the director and producer must evaluate them to see if they would fit the role – sometimes they don’t even give auditions given that some have a high reputation already – and when it is complete or rather during casting, locations and scenery are being made and the animators are chosen if required.
As an introverted child, I imagined myself being a wealthy movie producer. I wanted to choose what stories to tell in my movies
According to Ward, the creation phase is the early entrepreneurial stage of the company as the entrepreneur assembles the beginnings of an organization geared towards bringing the organization’s first product or service to market. In this phase, the Creator’s role is to create the organization from scratch, breathe life into the organization, and establish the organization out of nothing (Ward, 2003). When Spielberg was in college, he wrote a screenplay titled, Amblin’. This movie was about a teenage couple making their way through the desert to get to a beach that symbolized paradise. Amblin' became a reality after Spielberg was introduced to aspiring producer Dennis Hoffman. This movie, only 26 minutes long, led to his becoming the youngest director ever to be signed to a long-term deal with a major Hollywood studio (Universal) after Sid Sheinberg, then the vice-president of production for Universal's TV arm, saw the film (Amblin', 2011). Spielberg was not so awed by this attention from a studio bigwig that he did not have some misgivings. “I was still several months shy of my twenty-first birthday, and I hadn’t graduated from college.” But Sheinberg said, ‘Do you want to graduate, or do you want to be a film director?’ (Sanello, 1996). The movie had a $15,000 budget. In 1968, his friend Dennis Hoffman provided financing of approximately $10,000 for the production of the film. Spielberg and Hoffman agreed to the “1968 Amblin’ Contract” that prohibited Spielberg from receiving money for directing Amblin’ and was to direct movies presented by Hoffman for the next ten years. Amblin’ received many awards including the Atlanta Film Festival and Venice Film Festival (Amblin', 2011).
Students will learn about the variety of emerging hybrid producer positions and more traditional producer roles as well as in-class discussions on real life situations involving decision making and problem solving. Directing 202: Continuing the development of the director’s craft, encompassing concepts of rehearsal, overall theme and story resonance, and staging scenes with multiple actors, plus managing a cast and crew. A crew includes a screenwriter, whose job it is to provide the written blueprint version of the entire film. This is basically the starting point for any movie. Next there is the producer. There are many types of producers; executive producers, co-producers, assistant producers and line producers. They all do very different things. Some are the producers are responsible for raising the funds for the movie while others are responsible for the production that goes on during the filming of the movie and still other producers are in charge of what physically goes on the set. Then it is time for the director. The director is in charge of the actors. The director works with the actors to visually bring to life what was written on the screenplay (Fortunato, Who Does What on a Film). Now the idea needs to come together. The idea of writing, “what you know” is not always true and writing, “what you come to know” is in fact a more accurate way to write. Other good ways to formulate ideas are to use existing plays, novels, short stories, life stories, new articles, or even past TV shows and film. When using existing work a person needs to make sure that one secures the copyrights before starting write. Securing the copyrights does not mean one is finished yet. Now a person needs...
Film scoring is all about making sure the music others create, goes well with a particular scene in a movie/TV shows or advertisements. The advantage of this is that you get to have fun and know that your music will be heard and enjoyed by others. However, the field is very hard to get into as there is a lot of competition. It is very difficult to make a living off this career as most projects want original music, but if a person puts in enough effort they could actually make a fortune. The music is important in the film as it creates the atmosphere. It is used to create the mood of a certain time or place (setting), tell us something about what kind of character the actor or actress is etc. Many people are faced with harsh challenges as soon as they get into the field of film scoring because of the deadlines and little expertise. It is widely suggested to get a Bachelor Degree in film scoring.
The film industry has always been somewhat of a dichotomy. Grounded firmly in both the worlds of art and business the balance of artistic expression and commercialization has been an issue throughout the history of filmmaking. The distinction of these two differing goals and the fact that neither has truly won out over the other in the span of the industry's existence, demonstrates a lot of information about the nature of capitalism.
Many people don’t think about it so much, but movies (or just film in general) have become such a big part of our lives that we don’t think much of it because it just feels like a usual part of living. But have you ever wondered why this is, and how far back film started? Movies and film have been around for a long time, have developed in big ways throughout time, and has advanced in such a big and new way to this day.
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
I decided to be a director when I was fourteen years old. I was in my tenth grade and studied about world wars in history. I was inspired by the stories of the wars and started writing stories based on the same subject. I had little clue what to do with those stories until I watched ‘Saving Private Ryan’ .This movie based on second world war inspired me to be a filmmaker.
The main purpose for a film editor is to just edit videos, which is self-explanatory, mostly for themselves or for a big company. They also have to get their own equipment which is time and money consuming. They also need to be good with computers and very patient. They have to be patient because some jobs are very long. The longer jobs are movies, long videos,...
