College Pressures
One major thing in life that I think everyone should experience is College. Whether it’s to get a general degree or a specific degree. Choose something you would enjoy and wouldn’t mind doing every day for the rest of your career. Other wise your wasting your time, your parents time, and the money. Going to college has a massive amount of pressures for the students to take on. My personal opinion anxiety carries a heavy part of it and I believe it falls under self-induced pressure only because of your cognitive state. Your thinking processes have a way of controlling your behavior and the outcome in which you study or even make time for yourself to study. I do believe the pressures to be mainly internally psychological because of all the thoughts from the unconscious mind. These students could be thinking positive or negatively; but our behaviors rely on these thoughts. We experience fear, stress, and anxiety from that of which comes from our mind. There are ways to conquer these internal thoughts.
On your first day of classes you’re probably having a knot in your stomach especially stepping foot into that class for the first time of your college career. I know that I felt like my stomach was in my throat and didn’t know what to expect. Some of us have a little more confidence then others but in all reality everyone has some insecurities whether it’s about them personally or their behaviors. Some of us fear the thought of “fitting in” or “doing the right thing.” We as people it is in our nature that we question what other people are thinking about our behavior or us in general. ... be determined and ask yourself what you’re doing is worth all the fear, stress, and anxiety. If you keep in the back of your mind why you’re doing it and have incentives or motivators it shouldn’t be as hard for some people. I know that I don’t want to be working a low paying job struggling to get by or having to rely on someone to pay my bills and support my daughter and I. I would much rather sit through school and take on these pressures knowing it will not be easy but willing to accept the challenge to get a higher paying job and helping people than to do back breaking labor for crazy hours struggling to get by. I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know that my daughter will be absolutely grateful once I earn my degree and enter into a new career making almost 3 times the amount I am making now and being able to give her the life I’ve never had.
Going off to college is probably one of the best things a person can do to further their education. The promise of a degree from a university seems achievable but is shadowed with the many challenges that come with a higher edification. Often many college students find themselves bothered by these obstacles which can determine whether the college student succeeds or not. There are many endeavors in college but it depends on how the student reacts to these situations.
From the beginning of high school, students strap on their seatbelts and prepare for one of the most vigorous races of their lives – becoming successful. With the rare occurrence of a break, kids are expected to keep on driving as fast and as powerfully as they can in order to get into a “great” college, which would be followed by graduate school and then an actual job that would make a lot of money. In American society, common values include working hard, determination, and being so productive that free time is not even a question. However, this philosophy is taking a major toll on American college and high school students. For at least 40 years, America’s future has been steadily growing unmotivated, tired, and hopeless due to the overemphasis on performing well in school. This phenomenon is appropriately expounded in William Zinsser’s “College Pressures”, which takes a look at the top four sources of tension that cause these feelings of dejection and agitation. After reading this article, I came up with a few solutions to this national problem. It is time to switch the harsh, over-encouraging green light of education to a comfortable yellow one. In order to make this ideal transition, directors of education across the country need to primarily reduce the amount of out-of-class assignments, lighten the grading system, and incorporate days in the school year that allow students to express their thoughts about school and provide useful feedback.
College is hard, scary, and stressful especially with children involved. I think it is a good thing I went to college when I did otherwise, I would be stuck in the same minimum wage job that I have had for the past year. It is going to be hard and stressful but the truth is that were all scared. It is just a matter of pushing myself into getting where I want to be. My main fear with college is mainly flunking out, it is scary but, it is also achievable. I thought to myself, “Hey, if my best friend can go to college then why I can I not”. There was three things that pushed me into going to college. Those are: getting a better job so I can spoil my children, continuing my education, and to be a role model for my children.
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
While transitioning into college, socialization is very important, but students should recognize the bigger picture (hbr.org). Everything might be an essential for college, only if students are able to regulate them nicely, in order to prevent stress. Create the perfect routine to reduce the decision about what to do every day. (hbr.org). Always take find time to do you hobbies, or just something that is in your interest. This can pull minds out of the stressful day, so it have time to “replenish your energy” (hbr.org). Students should always review the progress, and whether they approached their goals (hbr.org). No one is perfect, don’t always shoot for perfection, because it will only add on stress. To handle stress, talk to someone about your problems, one of the worst way to handle stress is to hold the feelings in. There are also psychologists on campus to help students with their needs. Motivation in college is different. For starters, as a student, I have to be self-motivated. My parents are not here to make sure I get my work done and go to class. I have to find motivation in myself to go to class and get my work done.

Many first year college students face problems as they enter a new educational environment that is very different than that of high school. However, the common problem is that many first year students become stressed. For many students, college is supposed to be the most fun time of their life; however, their fun can be restricted if it is limited by stress and other mental illnesses. According to the National Health Ministries (2006), stress is caused by “greater academic demands,” the feeling of being independent from family, “financial responsibility,” homesickness, being exposed to meeting new people, peer pressure, “awareness of one’s own sexual identity,” and the abuse of drugs and alcohol (p. 2). However, the causes to first year students’ stress mainly include academic demand, parents, finance, and peer pressure.

William Zinsser’s essay “College Pressures” emphasizes the struggles students have in trying to conquer the college milestone in life. Zinsser believes that college has lost the authenticity of the overall goal of gaining knowledge for one’s own interest, rather than the overall need of going. He sympathizes with struggles college kids go through and hopes to provide insight on the overall situation. One of his major points are that succeeding the first time is not always the best way in learning, and that sometimes students need to fail in order to properly learn. Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
Going to college can be an exciting new experience that can challenge a person more than he or she thought was possible. Attending college, especially for the first time, can be a very stressful time in a person’s life. As I entered high school the pressure to succeed and live up to my parent’s expectations increased. I joined clubs that my parents approved of, I took classes that would look good on my transcript, and I studied 24/7 to keep a good GPA. Seeing the people around me happy and proud of me was a good feeling. I stayed up all night just so I could study and get good grades that would make my family and teachers proud. Junior year I never got more than four hours of sleep a night. I was a zombie just going through the motions of life. As I began to look for colleges, the pressure to be #1 grew. My parents took me on countless college tours, thirty seven to be exact, in order to find the “right school for me.” My parents drove me around the country visiting tons of top engineering schools. Occasionally we would visit schools I wanted to visit. But every visit went the same. The academic pressure is one of the major stress factors in my life. The academic environment is very competitive and everyone wants to be the best. Not only are am I competing with my peers, I am also competing with myself. I always want to exceed my expectations. Which can cause me to become anxious at times.
