What is Time Management? Time management is not showing up to class on time, homework in hand, finished 10 minutes before class started. Nor is it showing up to class on time, homework in hand, finished the night before. Time management is knowing that there is a paper due in two months, and planning ahead in small, bite-sized chunks to complete it on time, keep your sanity, and still do everything else you want to do in college. It is not boring yourself to death figuring out schedules for months in advance when your plans change day by day, but the art of fitting in everything you want and need to do, both as part of the college experience and beyond, without undue stress or allowing basic needs to fall by the wayside. Now, if you can describe exactly how you spent all of your time yesterday, good for you! For the rest of us, if you struggle to remember what you did, never have enough hours in a day, or do not remember where the hours between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. went, then it is time to start learning this essential skill. A strong foundation in time management skills will not only allow you to perform better in college but improve your ability to accomplish great deeds. Begin with concrete times that you have very little control over. Fill in your class times, lunch time, and when you need to wake up to go to class. What time should you be getting to sleep? This is going to depend on you being honest with yourself. A little less than eight hours of sleep per night is average for most adults (“What Are We Doing?” 60). It does not matter if you need more or less time to get a good night’s rest, but you should go to bed at whatever time allows you to feel fully awake and functional for the next
