What pop sensation Beyoncé and English poet William Shakespeare have in common is that they both believe that the power the heart has over the mind when falling deeply for another can drive one to be “looking so crazy in love”. One of the common thematic ideas reflected in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is that being in love can cause one to do and say crazy things without thinking clearly, making the experience of love not so lovely. As shown by the lovers in the play, love can be a battlefield, love could be illogical, and love could be false instead of true. In act three of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lysander fell for Helena and stopped loving Hermia. This ‘love’ he had for Helena made him do and say crazy things while disregarding his true love, Hermia. Although he was under a love potion, this situation exemplifies how the wrong people sometimes fall in love. Lysander says, “Not Hermia, but Helena I love” (II, ii, 120). Lysander and Hermia were true lovers, but because Lysander was transfixed with Helena’s beauty, love changed. The potion made one fall instantly in love with the first thing in sight. In Lysander’s case, it was Helena. Similar to how situations may play out today, one may instantly fall in love with another simply because of loving the way they look. However, truly falling in love with another is more than just about the way they look. It’s also about being in love with that person as a whole - the way they think, the way they talk, and the way they act. In act 4, Lysander snapped out of the magic spell and he found himself together again with Hermia, the person who he loved every little thing about. False love made Lysander behave crazily, but he found his true love again and everything worked
